1969 ZL-1 Previous Owner Story.....
...anyone catch this in this month's Corvette Fever??? Previous owner of the Yellow 1969 ZL-1(supposedly one of two built)that Roger Judski owns writes Corvette Fever from prison(Judski got the car years ago for $300,000 in a gov't drug dealer auction)asking if they(Corvette Fever)knew the current whereabouts of his former car. They respond Judski still owns it. He also notes how he was "busted" without one gram of drugs as evidence and all his possessions were confiscated & sold.

Yeah, I was just reading that letter a little while ago. The issue just showed up in my mailbox today. That's the ZL1 that started life right here in Richmond VA, sold by a local dealer, that I didn't know until a few years ago was big into selling high performance cars back then. The closest I can claim any kind first hand knowledge is talking to a guy a couple of years ago who sat in that ZL1 on the showroom floor before it was sold. BTW, that guy is an original owner of a 396/375 horse 68 Camaro that he bought at that same dealership.

His dealership is not far from me, the ZL1 used to show up every now and then at large shows, I remember I showed up late to the Winter NCRS show and the ZL1 was on the trailer I took every picture available in camera on that car.

I did see his letter from jail in Corvette Fever. Corvette Fever stated in their response that they were sorry to hear he was still in jail. I think they were being polite.

Also, Bizzoco's Guidebook has a lot of the initial details, including how the car sat at the dealership (mentioned above) for a long time without a buyer...I think it was 2x the cost of a loaded '69, somewhere north of $12,000 list.

It was confiscated from Lynn in 1990. Not sure how long he had owned it.

Rodger has said that the car's sticker price was $10,773.65 and other articles have said that George Heberling
ordered the car with "every option". I still can't get the price this high even with all L88/ZL1 options available,
unless the car also has some COPO options.
-4,781.00 CORVETTE COUPE
----79.00 LEATHER SEATS
----16.90 A01 TINTED GLASS
----32.65 C50 REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER
----36.90 F41 SPECIAL SUSPENSION
----46.35 G81 POSITRACTION
----42.15 J50 POWER BRAKES
---384.45 J56 HEAVY DUTY BRAKES
----10.55 K05 ENGINE BLOCK HEATER
----81.10 K66 TRANSISTOR IGNITION
-1,032.15 L88 430HP TURBO-JET
---290.40 M22 HD 4-SPD TRANS
---147.45 N14 SIDE MOUNT EXHAUST
----84.30 N37 TILT-TELE STEERING
----33.15 PU9 WHITE LETTERED TIRES
----21.10 TJ2 FRONT LOUVER TRIM
----26.35 UA6 ALARM SYSTEM
----11.60 U15 SPEED WARNING INDICATOR
--3000.00 ZL1 ALUMINUM BLOCK
10,157.55 SUBTOTAL
Destination Charge in 1969 was based on where delivered to. Since Heberling was a factory employee,
would there have been a charge at all? Most destination charges I have seen for 69 were less than $150.
Still can't get it up to $10,773.65.
Are these prices wrong or I am adding them up wrong?
Anybody know?

An article in May 1988 Vette magazine says that the first retail sale of this ZL1 was January 20, 1970 to John Zagos for a discounted price of $8100. Zagos sold the car several years before he was killed in a drag boat accident.
It was sold 3 more times, all in the Richmond VA area before Wayne Walker of Zip Products purchased it in the mid 70's. Walker and Zagos went to high school together. Walker had read an article about the rare car and asked Zagos if he knew where tha car was. Zagos did. The current owner of the car at that time had paid $3000 for it. Walker bought it from him for $6000. The original engine was not in the car at the time.
Walker dropped the tank and the tank sticker was in place. Listed was ZL1 Aluminum Cylinder Block and 8-Cylinder Conditioning. What "8-cylinder conditioning" is still being debated.
Zagos had blown up the original ZL1 mill the first night he got the car and GM replaced it under warranty. Zagos ended up with both motors. No one knows if the dealership offered it to him or if he bought it back after the warranty claim was settled. By the time Walker purchased the car both ZL1's engines were being used in drag boats on the James River. He was able to find and purchase both engines.
Walker had the car restored at Neighbors Brothers in Houston TX. In January of 1986 he sold the car to Ed Mueller. Mueller sent the car back to Neighbors Brothers to remove the body and totally strip and repaint the car.
The article ends there with Mueller trailering and showing the car. I remember seeing the ads in the back of Corvette Fever for the upcomming asset siezure auction, but I don't remember the year.
On the ZL1 pricing, I believe the commonly refered to $3000 engine option really the price for the over the counter block at the time. The sticker price option was $4,718.35 on the $4781.00 base price.
I just found a full page ad from the U.S. Marshals Service on page 41 of the Nov 1991 Keepin' Track of Vettes magizine. The Auction was Friday October 11, 1991 2:00 pm at the GSA sale site State Road 3 & 5th Street Corner, Kennedy Space Center, FL. This is the auction where Roger Judski purchased the only documented ZL1 sold.

Either way you look at it, it's quite a story and quite a car. Perhaps time will tell, but I think this could become one of the most interesting and rare muscle cars of the entire era!
