Default Under hood paint

How is the paint supposed to be under the hood of a 75 coupe? I would like to get it correct since it has been painted several times. Also, what type of paint and color is used in the area that aren't the same color as the exterior?

Should be a flat black. They came with insulation, but most are gone by now. I took mine out years ago.........

So how far out towards the edge do you go with the black, to the weatherstripping? What effect will not having the insulation under the hood have?

Mine goes just past the weatherstrip. The insulation was for sound. Pins were glued to the hood & the insulation was held up by retainers. I took mine out back around '78 or so, and my original paint still looks fine. You can get repo insulation, pins & retainers for around $70.....

So if you take out insulation is the car a little louder? I like that and my insulation is a little ripped but don't want car heating problems..

I thought the same thing (heat with no insulation)...but found out the insulation is for sound only. I took mine off 2 years ago with no problem with the paint, etc etc.

Hi TimD,
I believe the black-out paint was semi-flat.
Here are a couple of pictures of the transition from body color to black on my 71. I'd guess your 76 would be similar.
Regards,
Alan

I'm glad to hear the insulation is only for sound and not heat. I wanted to paint under my hood for a better look. Didn't really want to install the insulation.

Going to do the same here ..but..from from what I have heard , If you have A/C compresser without a belt guard ( or insulation under the hood ) you could damage the exterior hood paint ...
Not sure if that is correct of not ..

I like the look of the belt guard, a little crome is always good. Thanks

So do you prep under the hood the same as you do for the exterior prior to paint(epoxy primer, 2k, wet sand)? What type of paint is used for under the hood since it will be hotter in that area? Sorry for all the questions but would rather do it right the first time than have to redo a mistake.

I did mine years ago with a spray can. If I ever did it again I'd go with Dupli-Color engine enamal. It's all I use for underhood stuff. A nice semi-flat black. Prep wise, it came pretty rough from the factory so you don't have to do much unless you want it like vetteguy75s which looks great.... I went gloss black on my firewall & cowl cover....
