Default Whats the quickest way to make my car rumble like it has an exhaust leak again?

So a few weeks ago this guy comes in with his custom C3 at a car meetup and totally puts my C3's puny rumbling to shame.

Is there any quick-fix way to make my C3 sound like it has an exhaust leak again? I miss waking my neighborhood up, and making alarms go off.

An exhaust leak sounds like crap. Open headers sounds nice. On a stock L48 cutouts may sound cool idling but you'll sound like a motor boat cruising around. There isn't anything that will make your motor sound better than what it really is.

Sidepipes would be awesome on your car, would look similar to mine...

Drill a few holes in the exhaust would do it- although I would never advocate this

Open headers an then pull one spark plug wire off before you roll into the car show You could also retard the timing a tad bid too

I have flowmaster 40's on mine and its loud. i took my exhaust off to do some work under the car and had everything from the cat back removed. when i was done working on my car and went to start it up for a second just to make sure it was going to run before bolting everything back together it fired right up and it wasnt much louder than it was with the 40's bolted back on. if you want loud then go with 40's.

I'm not a huge fan of the sound on the 40's. To each his own though, right?

I've used to retard the timing when i was a kid to get the lope I wanted... man I should be ashamed of myself!

I not sure but are you asking how to be a poser? What
would you get from that, if you want a car that sounds
like its meant for the track than build it, other wise if it
sounds like a runner but preforms like a turd, than thats
all you will have. I would say just make it run the best
you can afford. To the experienced ear they will be able
to tell if you are the real deal or not.

Sorry just my to coins.

I have Flowmaster 40's on my otherwise stock 1981 with 107k miles on it. It sets off car alarms and wakes up the neighbors pretty well. It's not to obnoxious but it will make noise if you really want it to.

No more power? Mine dynoed just over 450hp with flat top pistons.

I put an 2.5" true dual exhaust, no cats and KBD Monza mufflers. They sound better in person then on the video. I think this is the sound you are looking for.

Build it to BE what you want it to sound like. A lumpy cam will give it the rough idle and higher compression will give it the pop through the pipes while a set of lower (higher number) gears will get it off it's butt due to the new lumpy cam. Otherwise it sounds like all those Mustangs running around..... No pop just more of a hummmmmm.
I have 11.1:1 Compression with an L79 cam with a little "head work" in my 327 with full stock exhaust and it sounds more intimidating (to the trained ear like Riggs 74 said) than all those low compression small cam cars with the loud muffler systems, except of course those people who think "louder is faster". Build the best performance motor you can afford for the best sound

If you want the deep healthy rumble you have to put on big diameter pipes. I use 3 inch dual right off the collectors back to 3.5 inch in and out stainless packed race mufflers with 3.5 inch straight back tips.

an exhaust leak is only good if you are feeling a little low on Carbon Monoxide

Do you have a stock motor with stock exhaust? What intake and heads?
What CI and compression?
My point was, if he wants to make a stock engine sound like a race engine add a Thumper cam. It won't give him much if any extra power but it will sound like it.
Headers and free flowing exhaust or hooker sidepipes will add to the illusion and probably add more power than the cam.

This sounds pretty good but I'm not crazy about it. When I had the leak..I remember it sounding like a semi. But the post above this is right - that carbon monoxide was plentiful when it was leaking.

Hey, losing some brain cells in exchange for looking cool never hurt no body no wheres no sir-e-bob.
