Default 81 Headlights Won't Turn On

I have an '81 and my headlight will raise just fine and all the marker lights come on fine, but no headlights. I didn't see a fuse, any idea what the problem might be?

How about the brights? Is it possible both headlights are burnt out?

Does the highbeam indicator come on when you flip the dimmer switch? If so that at least tells you power is getting to the dimmer switch (assuming your 81 is wired the same as my 80). There's a self resetting circuit breaker which should only be open in the event of an over heating condition. The other things to check would be that each light is properly grounded.

The headlights have their own fusible link down at the starter but as Gerry said if the high beam indicator will come on its not the link.

Thanks for the responses, I have no lights at all, high beam or low. I get no indicator when trying the high beams. I don't htink it would be a ground problem, one day they were working and then not. Where are the fuseable link you'all are talking about?

Down at the starter. Your sure when you have your high beams on that the high beam indicator in the dash is not on ?

No indicator at all, is it a fuseable link at the starter, or what would I look for? what is it attached to?

Here is a fusible link on Duke94s car. The short brown wire in a loop is the link. Its running between the 2 large red wires. The large black plastic pieces have crimp connectors inside. The wire inside the brown covering burns in 2 , so you have to pull on it to see if it stretches. On your car at the starter you will have 2 fusible links, one for the headlights and one for the rest of the car. Your links might be black in color.

I had a similar problem years ago with the 78, the headlights got dimmer as the evening wore on until they went out completely. Got pulled over, but the cop was cool and let me head home (the high beams did work).

Turns out the wire from the back of the fuse box through the firewall was going bad...

If it goes bad again, then you got a bigger issue somewhere in the circuit.

I have an '81 as well and now I just learned something else about it. Nice to know.

Hello, all!

That's fantastic, ALNDD!

Not to hijack this thread, but some might have a similar problem...

The high beams don't work on my '81. No power to the high beams and no high beam indicator. The low beams work fine - but, when I click to high beam, they go out! Shouldn't all four lights come on in "high beam"?

I'm thinking I've a bad high beam/dimmer switch. Would you all agree?

Thanks! ...Alan K.

I think you right since the dash light is not on. Yes all 4 should be on.To be sure use a test light and check at the dimmer switch the green wire for power. green=high tan=low
