Default Matte Black paint- Hi End Cars? (pics)

OK, OK. I admit I kinda chuckled sometimes when people would suggest painting their C3s Matte Black or flat black or Satin Black or whatever. It all sounded kinda "rat rod" and taking the cheap spray bomb way out... in many cases.

HOWEVER... on a recent trip to London, the wife and I were walking past this BMW dealer's window and saw:

It was stunning. Better in person.

BUT... a couple blocks away... in front of the Dorchester Hotel ...

Holy Cr@p.

I stand corrected.

I'd have to agree, it is stunning. Kind of "Batmobile-ish", yet in a classy way.
I bet a 69 with chrome bumpers, TT II's, and chrome(or matching) sidepipes would look pretty pleasing to the eye.
Can anyone photoshop that???

I can picture some cop trying to write the Lamborghini's plate number down as it drives by at 160.

Satin Black is a very nice color but it will probably be overdone like most popular colors.

I saw a Bentley last week done the same way.
I thought it looked horrible.

My old '78 K5 Blazer came from the factory with the top textured and painted flat black to match the removable fiberglass back top. The rest was painted glossy black with silver side panels. One of the best looking K5's I ever saw.
The flat black made the top rust out prematurely though.

it comes down to the scheme of things..... it's a lot harder to get a matte black car to look right than it is to get a typical painted car to look right...

The "hot" look right know is to "brush" the bright work to go with the "hot rod black".

I would like to see all three photoshopped if someone can do it.

Another "look" is the body in satin black and the highlights if I can call them that in gloss black. What would have been chrome is done in gloss black. I saw a 'Benz done like that a few years ago at SEMA and once you got past the "shock" of seeing it that way it was actually pretty darn cool.

I'm old enough to remember the week and a half in 1972 that webbing (Shoot thick paint under high pressure) and lace (from the domestics department of the local department store) were THE HOT LOOK!
Regards,
Alan

PS: Panic's looks great because his was one of the first I saw that didn't just look like it was waiting for paint.

Maybe in the sense that matte black cant be wet sanded and buffed for dirt spots etc...What you spray is what you get,or you do it all over.
But from a body work perspective, flat paint will hide almost all bodywork flaws.

So if your body work is poor, go flat all the way. If your bodywork is excellent, then you are doing fans of great bodywork a diservice by not showing off your straight panels.

maybe it's a trade off... skip on the paint and build up a high end motor to tuck under the hood/etc....

for me, a matte black car acts as a sleeper (per se') ... a rat rod has a different look though....

Absolutely correct, it's not an easy job to keep it clean and/or unmarked either...
