Maaco Paint Jobs
Ok, I want my car painted and I saw there some corvette owners have had great sucess getting their C3s painted at Maaco. Is this true? I find it hard to believe.

If you do all the prep / masking / sanding etc etc... and buy your own high quality paint (same color as car) - then thier best spray-guy can usually spray it on for you without screwing it up.
But it's still risky - even for a daily driver.

My Maaco paint job. Car was completely bare of all trim. They primed it, then shot it with a two stage paint job. $1250 total. It's not perfect, but I think it looks good and it always gets compliments.

I have had several cars painted from Maaco and they all came out great. Like mentioned the prep has a lot to do with it. Some Maaco's have better painters than others. Check out the quality of the paint work from your store.

I painted my hood there. It turned out to be good and I got a a fairly good color match. The car needs a new paint in the next few years. I just did not want to spend a lot on painting the hood now and Maaco was a viable option.
Not sure if I will take my car for the full paint job that will involve prepping and sanding to Maaco.

I had a car done at maaco and they sucked!!!! had lines in it made them fix it they broke all my emblems and truely did not give a sh*t about me and I was referred to them!! I called corporate and they did not care because they had a national campaign w/ celebrity about to start. i will NEVER go to a maaco again. Yes I know they might be individually owned but the corporate will not see a dime from me. Just my experience

Cant comment on their paint jobs but I had a local shop hang an ACI nose on my 69 vert several years ago, along with filling the holes left from a luggage rack. I supplied them with everything they needed and did all the prior removal of parts. Just wanted them to line it up and install the nose. They did a pretty nice job at a fair price ! No complaints.

guy #1 walks in off the street, talks to the monkey behind the counter that day with the 1/2 price coupon for the bargin job out of sundays paper, fills out the paperwork and tosses him his corvette keys after a 30 min conversation.................
guy #2 asks to see the MANAGER, asks to see their work on other Vettes with references. he also checks out some of their recent work in the pickup area. he then lets the manager know 2-3 months in advance when he's bringing in his pride and joy for the mid/upper level paintjob sale and makes an appt with MGR to have his best guys do it. lastly he stipulates in the dropoff paperwork that only the MGR is allowed to drive/move the car. Inspect the car with the MGR on pickup.
BE GUY #2 (LIKE I DID)
Finally, dont expect a best-of-show paint job at their driver-quality prices, just good workmanship

I have to chime in again...I've seen more guys on this forum have nightmares with high dollar paint shops. Maybe expectations are higher, but some of the stories I've read are heart-breaking! The last thing I wanted to do was leave my car with a painter for six months or more, drop $10k or more, then be afraid to drive it!
Most painters these days won't touch a Corvette (or any other collector car) anyway. It's almost like we are forced to pick the very high-dollar specialty shops, or go with a chain like Maaco. I couldn't justify spending big bucks on paint...It's not like my street-driven Vette is gonna be seeing Barrett-Jackson any time soon!

If I had done all the prep work (hardest part) Iwould sure avoid Maaco. Just contact a reputable shop with some high -end experience, and ask them what would they charge to spray it? The prep is the time consuming (and labor$) part, so why finish with a cheap spray? I am sure there are some great painters at some Maaco shops- but in general, they have a reputation for low-bid, ok quality work. Great for daily driver insurance jobs, not classic vettes.

This is really a no brainer.
Who has the better painter
The Specialty Corvette shop that paints 1 or 2 Corvettes a month or
The Maaco painter, that paints up to 3 or 4 cars a day.
Get a Maaco painter to help you on the side at your place with your body work/prep, let him paint it, you'll get the the best of both worlds.
