Default 1971 ls-5 max tire size

I need new tires for my totally stock, 1971 LS-5, with stock rims. What's the biggest (tall and wide) size tire that will fit without rubbing?

Roger,

I ran the B F Goodrich 265x50 15 radial T/A on all four corners of my '70 & '71 LS-5 coupes with no rubbing issues on stock rally wheels.

255/60's on mine and I rub the brake lines on the rear. I installed 1/4" spacers to get the clearance I needed.

Long ago I too ran 265x50R15 BFG T/A's all around on my '71.
Occasionally the front tire would rub the very rear of the fender well on a locked turn. Never caused any damage. Eventually gave up the 50 series tires for 60's due to ride and mileage reasons. The 50's follow every rut in the road, work you to death when cruising (manual steering), and throw up more dirt on the car body. But they do look cool.

I have P255x60 15 BFG T/As on the rear and P245x60 15 T/As on the front. I have a rub issue on the left front side. The rims are stock. I plan on dropping down to P235x60 15s in the front. No problems with the rear through the Vette Brakes mono spring makes her stand a bit tall in the rear. Mine is a 71 LS5.

I am considering the 235/70R15. They are 3/8" taller and wider than what I have on the car right now (225/70R15). From looking at my car and clearances I think they should fit.

Anybody had rubbing issues with 235/70R15?

Roger,

I currently have the 225x70 15's on both my '71's. I also have this same size in my tire tub as a spare. It is the largest tire that I could fit in that space. I had to lower the two rear carriage bolts almost to the end thread. and also lower the front bolt to be able to get the tire tub closed. I don't think any size wider will work.
