1974 Corvette P02 Deluxe Wheel Covers

1974 Corvette P02 Deluxe Wheel Covers
I have a 74 Corvette coupe that is almost fully restored. I know the "P02 Deluxe Wheel Covers" were stopped as a listed option in 1973 however I was wondering if anyone has heard of dealers installing these in 1974 when the car was new. I have pictures from the original owner showing these wheel covers on the car either the day it was purchased or a few days after and have also seen two other fully restored 1974 Corvette's with them as well (restorations that would be to NCRS standard for the exception of these wheel covers). I personally do not think they look as good as the rally wheels however may put them on the car since I know they were on it for most of its life. I am just curious if anyone else has seen anything like this or heard of a code a dealer would have used when ordering the car to get these as an option, as I know GM has done things like this in the same era. My guess is the dealer just sold them to buyers who prefered them from the previous year.

I have seen at least one big block convertible with the wheel covers...it was also my understanding the car had them when purchased new...I don't think it was a factory option either...
Anyway, I thoughT enough of the car to take a few pics...WAS A REALLY REALLY NICE CAR......this was taken at the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona Beach, Florida 4 or 5 years ago....

All of my original Corvette parts book lists the PO2's as being for 68-74, not 73! I've never seen them listed anywhere else as an available option for 74, though. I've wondered if GM decided to offer them, after they cancelled the aluminum wheel option? Though there would be some record of that, I would think. I show the parts counter list price about $45.00 each in Jan. 76. So even if they were $40.00 each in 74, that would make them a pretty expensive dealer installed option. White lettered radials were only $45 for the set and the 454 was $250.
Does the car still have it's tank sticker? I would be curious as to what it says.

ROBRICCI can you post any other pictures you have of the red 74 big block with the wheel covers. That car looks great!
gbvette62 regarding the tank sticker, I was only able to recover a small piece of it when I had the body taken off for the restoration so unfortunately this is no help. I also have seen the wheel covers listed for 68-74 when being sold, however when I google the 1974 Corvette option list I do not see them on there. You maybe right that they were offered by GM after they canceled the aluminum wheel option. I have seen a couple of restored 74's that look up to NCRS standard with them and I would not think these guys would go that far to just change the wheel covers. I can probably add another one to that list after seeing the 74 big block posted by ROBRICCI.

I just pulled out my copy of the 74 sales brochure. In it on the options page, is an illustration (not an actual photo), of a yellow 74 coupe with PO2 caps on it! No where in the copy or list of available options, are the PO2 "Deluxe Wheel Covers" mentioned. The brochure even includes a list of dealer installed options, including the luggage rack, right hand mirror, locking gas cap, compass, infant seat!, hand held spot light, 23 channel CB radio and fire extinguisher. The brochure is dated September, 73.
My 74 Assembly Manual doesn't show installation information for PO2s. I don't have a Chevrolet ordering guide or dealers price book for 74, in my collection, these would list them if they were available.
I can't get my scanner to scan the brochure at the moment, which is nothing new. I'm not sure if it's me or the scanner, though it's probably me. I'll try to post it from home later.

If you have black-wall tires or thin-line whitewalls or color-stripe tires, the P02's look better. If you have RWL tires, the rally wheels look better. [IMO]

I'm not sure how definitive this is but I have an original Parts & Illustration Catalog that was published in May 1974 which is during the production of the '74. As you can see by the page I scanned it shows p/n 3923630 as in use for model year 68-74.

I think P02 wheel covers look great, but they are heavy. They also stick way out. Anyone who owns a Vette with them probably has bruised his shins from banging into them. I've had my share of shin bruises...and I know the things stick out and I still hit them.

Thanks for posting up the brochure pictures, interesting information. One things for certain, they sure look good on the right restored vette (even if they do weigh more)
