wiper door, trim and grill value - pics
hello all,
I got these parts yesterday and just wanted to know if anyone could tell me what they are worth and if they are for a 68 or what. The wiper door appears to be original and is in excellent shape. The grill/air vent seems to be in excellent shape but I don't no if it's original or not.
Thanks,
andy

I just did an ebay search... the door WITHOUT the trim goes for $150-$200+, the trim piece can go as high as $300 BY ITSELF, and the grill can go for as high as $150+...
The cheapest door (just the door) on ebay today is $90 (and only ONE that I could find at that price)
Not available new anymore, so supply and demand rules...I know they fit 69-72, maybe 68 as well...
All of your pictured parts are original...

I suggest anyone finding these anywhere for $50-$75 scoop them up!
I believe the '68 grill at least is unique, the '68 has the wiper nozzles mounted to the underside of the grill. You can see where in the 1st picture, the 2nd shows the part number 3938153 for the '68.

Hi,
I agree that the washer nozzle location changed, but the grills continued to have the 2 threaded bosses at least through model year 71, #6589, and perhaps through model year 72.
I'd check to see if there is any sign of 2 rubber bumpers on the underside of the door. I believe they would be a sign of an early door.
Maybe a NICE find depending on the $.
Regards,
Alan

Hi,
I'm NOT sure if mine are threaded but the holes are drilled! I can feel the numbers but can't read them with my finger tips.

Alan

In my opinion, the door is only worth a premium IF the threaded holes for the hinges arent either stripped/enlarged, redrilled off center, or have broken bolts in them (which is harder than the surrounding metal and thus hard to remove correctly). I have seen a lot more with damage in this area than those that are in good shape.
I would be certain to ask any seller if the threads are undamaged before buying a door sight unseen.

$300 seems a little high for a used original wiper door molding. The 68 and 69-72 door moldings are reproduced and sell for about $150. 69-72 wiper door moldings have a tab on each end with a slotted hole in them. The hole was to accept a rivet I think, but it might have taken a screw, I can't recall at the moment. This tab and hole are not found on 68 wiper door moldings. From the photos, I can't tell if the hole is in the end of the pictured wiper door molding.
Good used wiper doors, without damage to the pivot bolt holes, are worth $150-$200. Ones with damaged holes bring $25-$100, depending on how bad the hole(s) are, and the knowledge of the buyer. 68-69 doors have 2 rubber bumpers attached to the underside by a screw. Every door I've ever seem has the drilled and tapped holes for the bumpers.
My 70 & 72 parts books both show 3938153 as the only part number for 68-72 wiper grilles. 68s had the boses drilled and tapped for the washers. 69 and later gilles may have been drilled too, I don't know for sure but I don't ever remeber seeing one that wasn't drilled. For sure, service replacement ones would have been drilled and tapped though. The wiper grille is easily worth $150.

More Pics
I took more pics tonight based on your suggestions. I do see what appears to be slots on each end of the wiper door. One end has a rivet?? the other appears that the rivet head is gone. Of the four holes in the ends, three seem to have threads and one looks suspect. On the underside of the grill, I see the humps but they are not drilled. I also included some other parts that came with the deal in a box. i know one is a door handle. the others I dont know. there is a very small vacuum hose with little T's and a little filter. Any ideas?

Hi Andy,
The 'L' shaped piece with the plunger and nut is from the wiper door system.
It mounts on the engine side of the firewall on a rod that comes through the firewall from the wiper door mechanism. The switch button that the plunger pushes signals the wiper motor that the door is open and the wipers can safely start.
Regards,
Alan
You can see it below the washer hoes coming from the pump.

On a 69 and up door, the ends of the stainless steel trim piece are fastened to the door with tiny screws. On the 68, there are no screw fasteners at the ends of the trim piece. On a 69 and up door, there is a build up of metal on the edge of the door to accomodate the screws. On a 68, the door casting is shallower because of the lack of screws. I have both a 70 and 68 door. I can give you both part numbers when I get home.
.......Door value. I paid $150 for a perfect 68 door. Perfect means essentially that the four attaching bolt holes were in working condition. On most used doors, there's part of a stripped bolt in one or more bolt holes. The threaded portion of the attaching bolts are very thin. (These are the bolts that need those little nylon washers.) J&D Corvettes currently has about 50 or so used doors. (Just my guess) I went through nearly everyone of of them until I found one that was usable as is. The door is an aluminum alloy (I was told it was an aluminum pot metal aloy..don't know if this is true.) As years go by, the steel bolts corrosion weld to the door and shear off when you remove them.
Didn't know that stainless steel trim piece goes for $300!! Going to use special attention with it now!
