Default 1970 L46 motor photos needed of...

Greetings!

For all those with a 1970 350/350 L46 motor,
I need photos of how your heat shields, plug wire looms,
covers are mounted to the motor. I have the 1/4 - 20 #8 1/2" bolts to
attach them but can't remember exactly how and where they go. I have
the assembly manual but I would rather see the real thing as opposed to
a drawing.

Thanks.

Hi Rudy,
The shielding is difficult to photograph with the engine in the chassis. I found Paragon to have a VERY good drawing showing the wire supports and spark plug heat shields.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

The 71 sb cars only have the radio shielding on the rear plugs so you only see the mounting brackets on the rear header bolts.

Nice shots Alan

What coating do you have on your manifolds?

Alan,

Thank you very much.
What a beautiful motor you have there!

Now, I'm not expecting anyone to put there car in the air and take photos,
but if anyone during there motor restoration has photos of how the brackets,
wire looms and shielding attaches to the block from the underside, with the 1/4 - 20 x 1/2" bolts,
it would be appreciated. I wanted to attach everything this weekend.

Thanks again.

This may help a little. This is a GM promo pic of the 70 LT-1. I would think the L-46 would be the same. No shielding on the front two plugs in this pic though.

Glenn
Glenn,

Thanks for the photo. I'm a bit perplexed. I have these heat shields
that Allan has on his motor and I also have (2) of what I presume are
(4) total of these chrome covers like the one shown on the LT-1 photo
you posted.

I was at Bloomington Gold last week taking pictures of the original cars
judged for Survivor and for Certification - Gold and Silver.

I found that the LT-1s had what appeared to be both the heat shields and the chrome covers, where the
elongated chrome covers that cover the plug wires and come down from the even larger chrome cover
over the distributor and attach to these lower chrome covers over the heat shields. I do not have my
assembly manual handy, so I'm not correctly identifying the name of these parts.

Confused? So am I. That's why I need photos from beneath the motor.
No ramps on the greens at Pheasant Run.

I was confused with the responses, and thought you were looking for the chrome attaching point. Real PITA to get a pic of, so I'll try to explain first.

In that engine photo you'll notice at the lower rear of the plug shield with the big hole in it, there's a wing nut. That attaches to a tab with a hole in it from the long vertical piecs that extends forward, locating itself with the other pieces hole. The wing nut goes through each hole and gets a nut on the back. This is from memory now

The other side is similar BUT the wing nut passes through both holes and then threads in a bracket that serves to seperate the wires as well as support the shields. Believe the bracket bolts to the rear of the block.

I will try to get a pic.

Hi Rudy,
The picture Glenn posted is a bit miss-leading, although a beautiful engine.
For 1970 up till ABOUT serial number 14000 the engines had the 4 spark plug heat shields and 4 flash chrome plated horizontal radio shields. After about 14000 and through 71-72 model years the engine still had the 4 heat shields but just the REAR 2 horizontal radio shields.
The flash chromed distributor/coil box changed from the 2 piece box to the 1 piece cover during 1970 production at about serial number 12800 and continued through 71-72.
The vertical shields remained the same in appearance, but may have changed in detail during the years.
So when your car was built may affect what pieces it had originally... if that matters to you.
Regards,
Alan

Hi East,
It's great to talk to you.
The manifolds have 1200 degree Cast Blast on them. It's gotten a little lighter in color and flatter in sheen now that it's driven a very little bit.

Alan

Alan,

I appreciate the correct names and VIN number reference,
relevant to production of the radio shields and the distributor/coil box.

My 1970 VIN ends in 10160. When I bought the car 4 years ago,
it was without all the shielding and I've slowly been buying them,
I have (2) original of the four radio shields which are in excellent
condition and just recently at Bloomington, the set of four heat shields.

When I was in Carlsile a couple of years ago, I bought the vertical wire
shields and the 1 piece box cover for the distributor, basing it on the
72' I had way back when. Now I realize, I need the two piece box
instead, as I want to be correct. So the search continues.

Thank you very much!

Dennis,

Thanks for the walk through.
After reading your reply, it just dawned on me what PITA stood for.
Hah! That's a good one. Yes, I do realize it asking for a lot. Thus, I was
hoping for someone who already had pictures taken from a previous
restoration or reference photos in general.

Any photos of the underside would be appreciated. I think I still need to
find a set of the ignition shield support kit. (8) bent metal brackets.
This is really getting to be a real pain.

not to add to your confusion, but the box support brackets,(the ones painted engine orange), are different over the years as well.

I'd also say the box would be of the 3 piece variety, which effects the configuration of the previously mentioned supports.(again fron memory)

Dennis,
I wonder if the box support brackets that I have for it now would even
work? Huh, interesting.

It would be great if these would work for the 3 piece variety.
Do you have the 3- piece box on your car? I attached a couple of photos
of my existing setup.

Joe,

Lookin good. Like the engine shade of orange.

I have the 3 piece box. Takes small phillips screws, and a wing nut or two attached to the brackets. Hence the different styles of the bracket.

Very informative NCRS thread on the subject.http://www.ncrs.org/forums/showthrea...ckets&uid=4540

Hi Joe,
The painted supports on my 71 seem to be like the ones in your pictures.
1 opening for the wire rubber grommet, 1 hole with a welded nut, next to the wire opening, and one hole without a nut about 1/2 way down the suport. I've mounted the 2 piece style dst/coil box or 1 piece style on these supports.
There are are repros of the 8 brackets but they are a pretty easy tell.
I don't know if this info helps.
Regards,
Alan

Dennis,

Now I realize there are a vast amount of posts on the NCRS forum,
so being a member as well. So where exactly are you referring to?

Alan,

Thank you for the photos.
In my opinion, all photography regarding our corvettes are deemed
noteworthy. This will help me out. Have a safe and happy 4th!

Here's a few L-46 pics I had saved for my own reference that may help. These are a few forum members engines.

You did click on the link I posted? There's only 14 replys to that post. They all have merit, but check out #9 in regard to the bracket differences.
