L/88 Hood Decal

L/88 Hood Decal
I know these were not installed on every car but looking to find out any information on ones that may have had them. The decal I am referring to is listed as a L/88 hood decal (black with silver outline). They also made a similar one for the LS-7 that was never produced in 1970 (that one was silver with black outline). I have done a little research and the only example that appears to be an original GM install is on Bill Tower's 67 L-88 featured in Corvette Fever's February 2009 issue. There it shows the L/88 decal on the left side valve cover and not on the hood. I do not know if the right side valve cover also had that decal or if it got the standard Tonawanda decal, if anyone has seen pictures of the right side of that engine please let me know. I have also looked at other 67 L-88's and they did not have them, however Bill Tower's was a GM test car.
I know this decal was not on every or even most L-88's made but would like information on when and where it may have been placed. I am using this as a reference to use the LS-7 version they made back then on my crate LS-7 454 build.
The L/88 decals are stated to be for 67-69 model years.
The GM part number for the L/88 decal is #: 3963196
The GM part number for the LS-7 decal is #: 3977830
Any information with this would be great.

The L/88 decal was supposed to be on the Hood. But later GM changed the application to an over the counter part like the over the counter GM L88 engine.
On the hood was only the 427 numbers for production purposes.
L/88 decal was never put on the valve covers. One of the reasons is it is a paper type decal which sooner or later would peel of and you see the Foil Tonowana(sp) only on the valve cover which stays on for a long time.
Hope this helps.

It is my understanding no L-88 marking of any type was ever used, other than the 67 exception you cite.
The 69 AIM shows a decal and the placement -- also not used.

Except the 88 engines had a paper type decal on the rear of the right valve cover with the 'IT' letters identifying the engine as a L88 and no others

Below is the page from the 70 AIM, showing the placement of the LS-7 decals.
