Default soft parts goo?

I have a spare 76 steering wheel and door panels , BUT the wheel and pull straps have a kind of sticky black goo on them from what I assume is a long storage issue. How to get that gunk off? Its very sticky and leaves a kind of gritty sticky black grease on my hands. I have seen this B4 on a 70's Vega steering wheel. Where it was exposed to sunlight in a hot closed car for a long period (years) so I also assume it is a mid 70's GM issue.

It can happen to any similar part. I would use some castrol super-clean. It will de-gunk just about anything. You might try Simple Green first.

That 'goo' is probably a residue from the plastic as it breaks down over long periods of time. It started out as oil, so that's what it [eventually] becomes again.

A good solvent or detergent will clean that stuff off. Keep those plastic parts out of the sunlight (or wrap them in brown paper) to minimize break-down.

i would try a bit of simple green first, then i would probably use something like goo gone to remove whatever residue (stickiness) that the simple green didn't get.

i know it sounds strange, but baby oil is also particularly good for petroleum based residues (like tar, etc). learned that as an old trick from the lifeguards on the beaches down here in south florida years ago. every guard stand had a supply of baby oil to remove the tar that would inevitably wind up on every little kids feet while they played in the surf.

if all else fails, try some WD40

Denatured alcohol is the only thing I've found that works on this.
