Default Painting the Emblems /Nameplate

I've read a little bit about painting the emblems with Testors model paint. I am concerned about the paint flaking after a while. Is there an way to repaint/preserve original factory emblems or would I be better off buying some of the new stuff? I am concerned about quality of aftermarket items - is one supplier any better than any other. Thanks!

I have done this many times and it really does work great. The first and most important step is to strip off the old paint. I've seen guys use everything from Aircraft Remover to plain paint thinners and solvents. Get them totally clean though. Use a tiny brush or a lot of guys use a toothpick to drip and set the paint into all the nooks and crannies. Once it dries it's quite durable but for added protection and brilliance just spray the emblem with some rattle can clear coat available at any chain parts store.

Hi b,
If you decide on new emblems I believe the emblems manufactured by a company named Trim Parts are the best.
Many of the venders distribute them but it's best to check to be sure what you're going to receive.

Alan

I have also painted quite a few emblems. Yes cleaning and removing old paint and dirt and grease is very important. I would also suggest to use Testors Model Master line of paint. It is a little better quality.

I paid 99 cents for each of the three color Testor's paint bottles required to do your emblems. That is enough paint to freshen these things for a long long time. I don't think you'll have an issue if you are careful with your prep.

After a while, you paint them again.

I did the emblems on my 68 with hobby paint back in 86 or 87. So far, no flaking and they do not need to be repainted.

I redid mine by stripping them of all paint, cleaning, then using "Porcelain" hobby paints (used for painting on glass/metal) to fill the flag areas. The Porcelain paints are baked after the paint dries, so it is a permanent and very durable surface. Mine were done 5 years ago and they still look like new. If you send me a PM with your e-mail address, I can send back a photo of the gas cap emblem.
