I had the same problem on my 74. First don't quit trying... I had a pro come over. From the underside he removed the small triangular panel bolted to the wheel well and the side. It exposes the charcol canister. Remove the canister. Now you can acces the hood lever. It's just outboard of the brake vacuum boost. Pull down on it and voila.
Oh... It required long arms and 2 hours of trying to get it. Good luck

On my '73, which should apply to your '74, there is an access plug in the wiper cove behind the release mechanism on the drivers side. You will need to find a length of rod to insert into that hole to shove the release lever forward. Not sure of the lenth of (1/2") rod I used but you will figure out real quick if it's too long or short.
Hope this helps.

Hi and thanks but the cable broke on the passengers side. It is attached on the drivers side, I can left the hood up about 3 inches without doing damage but need some advise on how to get the passegers side unlatched.

when i first got mine it was rigged up with a coat hanger, when the hood latch was pulled it unlocked the driver side the i had to pull it up enough to get my hand under it and grab the coat hanger.so you might be able to fish at the lever with a coat hanger and pull towards the driver side

I keep a heavy wire tied to the latch arm so if I have to take the wiper shield off I can take something and grab the wire and pull it and it is open. It's on the drivers side like konlol1 suggested. Good luck!!
