Loud screech from under car
I just replaced my exhaust and headers on my 79 and while I was under there I replaced the tranny pan gasket and oil pan gasket. Put everything back together and drove it for about 50 miles and no issues. Stopped at a red light and noticed a screeching sound. Drove it home and it the sound seems to be coming from underneath the car in the vicinity of the tranny/engine. Checked all my fluids (oil and tranny fluid) and they appear to be normal.
I thought maybe a loose belt but they are ok, it is coming more from the rear of the engine. At first I thought maybe I knocked the oil pickup off the pump but I have oil pressure and the temp gauge never went above 180 so not sure what is going on.
I am going to put it up on jack stands this week to inspect, and if anyone has any clues, please give them to me. Car still runs fine but it never had that noise before.
It is a 1979 L-48 with a 350 engine and 350 auto tranny.
Thanks

No the power steering is fine, the sound is coming more from the rear of the engine. I am going to start pulling belts off just to make sure and take the AC compressor and the power steering pump out of the question.

I had a similar noise on my '81 and it sounded almost like a belt, or metal scraping and it turned out to be an exhaust leak at the heat riser. I tightend all the bolts and the noise is gone. goodluck

Jacobs81 has the winning answer. Took my belts off and still had the problem. There was a leak between the headers and the exhaust pipe......weird sound to come out of the exhaust. Thanks everyone, appreciate the help.

Wow, I've heard a few exhaust leaks in my time, and they all did the "tick, tick, tick" thing. I'll have to file this away for future reference, man, that would have had me pulling what's left of my hair out! I'm glad you got it worked out.

i too was baffled by the sound at first. Once the engine warmed up the sound would go away. i removed my belts and the sound was still there. i started worrying something metal was scraping and harming my engine. I would have never believed it was an exhaust leak until i crawled under the car and heard the noise and cupped the exhaust connections with my hands(gloves on). Glad you got your sorted out!
