I went from Muncie 4 speed to auto many years ago....cheepest overdrive possible.....
and so the shifter is a HURST stick shift BAR off God knows what set up, and modified with a lower end to take a stock GM shifter rod, that happened to fit the auto trans.....the know on top is a 8 ball, bought at a pool table supply house.....so I stuck it on the drill press and drilled it, put in a insert, and called it done.....
MAN, you just not cool unless you got a 8 ball on a Hurst shifter....

I saw this one in the motel parking lot while I was at Corvettes at Carlisle this year. He said that he bought the **** from Pep Boys for around $30 or so and only had to modify it with a Dremel a little bit to make it work. I really liked it but my son didn't care for it too much!

I have the actual one in this link in my car now and love it. I don't have any pics of it in my 81 but this is the thread I bought it from. It is larger than stock and fits my hand perfect, and since you just push down on the ball instead of a button, it has a clean look. My hand sits perfectly on it while driving.

Burning Brakes
Got this idea from a fellow Vette owner.
Had this handle laying around for years. Just welded up the hole that was there and drilled and tapped for the push part of the shifter.
Also used to have M/A 500 in the center, dremeled that out, painted it black and had a friend of mine make me the Chevy bowtie in chrome.
