Repair or Replace the Speedo Cable....
Hey everyone, I have just gotten back into my favortite hobby and picked up a 68 big block vert. Having a blast driving it and of course the first of many issues popped up...speedo went crazy, bounced all over, and then quit on me.
Got in there and pulled the speedo cable from the rear of the speedo, looks like the cable tip has twisted into oblivion and needs to be replaced.
Two questions here.....
Do you pull to original cable and rethread a new line inside...
or do you just remove the old cable and throw in a new cable?
If new cable is the answer, how long is the stock cable? (different websites show different lengths available..I am guessing 72 inches here)
If repair is the answer...how hard is it to thread the new line?
Any help is appreciated.

Drifting
I would recommed replacing the whole thing - inner cable and outer sheath. My problems went away after doing this- after having tried to just replace the inner cable.

Melting Slicks
I'm with '79 on this, tried to cheap out and just replace the inner. By the time I messed with it, and bought the lubricant......I ended up buying a complete cable CHEAPER than my first purchases.

Replace the cable. 68 cables are one year only so anything 69 and later will not work for you.
Have you checked to ensure the connection on the rear of the speedo head is not boogered up?

I have not checked the back of the speedo yet, but I plan to. Either way, the cable has to be replaced because its been twisted and torqued off at the end. This symptom may indicate bogging of the speedometer, which creates an even bigger pain. Is there anyway to check that connection the back do the speedo without full removal from the dash? I really want to avoid taking out the left dash pad, tough job to do.

Yes this is stock, I traced the speedo cable all the way to the trans. Single cable all he way. Now I just have to find the right cable. Also, I just removed the steering column and am about to pull the dash pad.
If speedometer needs rebuilding, anyone know a good place to send it to?
