1982 Corvette Gas Mileage
Hello,
I am looking to buy a 1982 corvette, and I have no idea on what it's gas mileage is. Can anyone tell me what the mpg on a 1982 Corvette is?

I have a 1980 4 speed manual and I get about 10-12 miles per gallon/premium only in town. Maybe 15 highway. Not your best for economics but you make up for it in mental mileage!
Good luck...

I think that an 82 in good working order should get better mileage than our 80's due to the fuel management system. I would guess somewhere in the low 20mpg range on the road and not a lot worse around town. My 80 set up the way it is gets around 15 in town. I haven't checked it in a while so I don't really know, but it gets better than my big '09 Dodge Hemi pickup.
But I don't really care. It is too much fun to drive! So as long as I can afford it, I'll drive it!

I responded to this same thread posted in the Tech section.
A little under 20 in town; around 25 at normal highway speeds.
AND.... 20 mpg at 100 mph! (assuming the CrossFire system is running properly and the 700R4 overdrive tranny with lockup is functioning correctly)

My 81 got right about 20 mpg hiway in stock form... it now has a 383/525 HP stroker, with a 700r4 trans, and a set of 3.73 gears ,,, it still gets right at 20 mpg hiway! go figure, eh?

Mileage is a function of engine displacement and engine rpm when at speed. How exotic the build on the engine doesn't matter so much. It takes the same horsepower to maintain 70 mph...regardless of the build.

thats not entirely correct... cam lift/duration ,LSA, intake runner size and length, as well as carb design, jetting and cfm, all play into mpg .. my point was that after nearly tripling my horsepower, I can still get nearly the same mpg hiway... but , open up the Quickfuel 750, and away goes a tank of gas in a blink of an eye ....

And AFR and load. Though I doubt you'd get the same mileage with a 250/250 cam cruising at 2000 RPM as you would with a 194/202...

Anyone can 'split hairs' about any topic. But, given the same engine displacement, the same running rpm at 70mph, and that the air/fuel mix for both engines is approximately the same at that speed, there probably won't be more than a couple of percent difference in highway mileage between the two engines. And, I can't say which would be better. But, we all have our opinions...

1. engine size
2. transmission final gear ratio
3. pumpkin ratio
4. wheel and tire size
5. driving style
6. others (condition of the car, environment on the road etc)
In a modern car driving style is most important, in a car with no overdrive and/or higher ratio rear end you'll get a very low MPG no matter what your driving style is. 82 vette is a very BAD choice if your concerned about MPG's. It is old, and it is heavy by modern two seater standarts...there is no cheap way around this. Plus your MPG's on a highway might drop when compared to City driving
