74 Shifter and console plate for 700 R 4
HI
I have a 383 Stroker, TH400 and 355 gears.
I'm taking out my Th400 Auto and putting in a 700 R 4. Can I use the same shifter or need a new one? If I need a new one any recommendations for a really good one? Are there any console adjustments required to change it out.
Where can i get a new console shifter plate to show the 4 gears? Will a C-4 plate fit in the console, again any or many adjustments required?
Appreciate any help..Thanks Len

You can use the same shifter. The only difference between the shifter for the 400 and the 700R is the detent plate that captures the shifter mechanism for each gear. If you leave it the same, you can only select 2nd, 3rd, and O/D ranges. It will still start in 1st and upshift as needed, regardless of the shifter position. But, you can't lock it into 1st range. This is exactly how the 1982 shifter worked, as the engineers didn't want the public to be selecting 1st range. Thereafter, the shift plate was changed to add the other detent position.
You can purchase another detent plate from some of the tranny builders, you can remove the detent plate and rework it to add the required notch, or you can just ignore it like me. The next time I need to 'dig' into the trans tunnel, I might revise that plate.
Note: I would really like the tranny to start in 2nd range unless it was manually shifted into 1st range. For normal driving, 1st range in a 700R [or 200-4R] is more of a nuisance.
