Default Installing the rear view mirror with the map light

So since I am doing the interior on my 73, I decided I would swap out the small corroded mirror with a lighted mirror from a 75. Now the question is, where in the fuse box of the 73 do I plug it in?

I'm going to the shop at lunch and I'll take a look at mine (74') and see if it's part of the overall wiring harness, or if it actually plugs in somewhere in the fuse box. I'll also take a look at the wiring diagram we have too.

There is a 'blank' 12V voltage spot in the center of the fusebox that runs the MSD ignition, but I believe the map light runs off've the same circuit that runs the courtesy lights (rotating the headlight switch to the left gives you that 'detent' that turns on the lights inside the vehicle even with the doors closed).

Go figure! I must've looked at not only the plastic laminated wiring diagram, but also the one in the FSM and I could not find the mirror light! I looked them over three times!!! Found the cigarette lighter, the courtesy LH, RH, Ashtray, etc, etc, glove compartment, rear compartment, my behind, but no mirror!

Mine has the mirror light and it is a single gray wire (typical Chevrolet color for instrument lamps and misc. illumination) with two connectors at the end, hooked up in series. It is not hooked up to anything, so I put 12V to it and the mirror light lit up when I moved the switch.

I also looked at the FSM for the wire layout behind the dash and I saw nothing there either. It does plug right into the fuse box though. So that's my guess and that's where I'm likely to plug it.

I dont think it plugs into fusebox...the wire runs across the header and down the windshield pillar...i think it gets spliced behind the header, i dont know what ckt it gets juice from...

I can't find my diagram, but I think it pigtails from another plug on the fuse box.

Another issue in using the 75 mirror, it is 10" long and the 73 is only 8", you will not be able to lower the visors without hitting the mirror.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it plugs into the fuse box. Not shown on the schematics because it's an accessory?

Who would have thought it would be in the AIM?? Anyways, As the AIM shows, I have two connector plugs, looks like one goes into the fuse box and where does the other connect to?

It was installed on the assembly line; that's why it's in the AIM.

Make sure that you test the light before you put the wire in place. The primitive internals of the light are a pain to work on and is much worse once mounted.

If you look really closely at the wire, you can see the 'other' connector is not hooked up to anything! The AIM shows it just being attached to itself.

The pigtail is there on the possibility something else might need power from the ACC slot.

BTSOM. I can't think of anything off hand, but, at the least, the GM engineers allowed for the possibility.
