Default firewall grommet for tach cable question??

i bought a couple of new grommets for my tach cable and speedo cable (the car i'm restoring didn't have any, so i have no reference)

how in the world are you supposed to get cables through the little hole in the grommets?? unless i'm missing something, it looks to me the grommets would have to be split open on one half of diameter to allow you to get cable into place. were the originals this way, or did the finish putting the fittings on the cables after it was slid through the grommet? thanks, Rick

I had to (and many others as well) slice one of the inter holes of the tach grommet. Then you can work the tach cable through.

I can't even guess how they did them at the factory without cutting a slit in them.

Yup, these are my experiences, as well. I used a brand new box-cutter blade to slice and when re-installed in the firewall, not even noticeable.

They probably installed the grommet on the cable while they were building the cable - slid it on before the ends were in place. A lot easier that way.
