Transmission Rebuild Cost

Transmission Rebuild Cost
So the inevitable inevitably happend. My baby's at the shop. Transmissions' shot (shifting randomly, metal clanking around, etc.), and I have a quote from a transmission shop for 1250 to rebuild it and get the car running again (includes any random parts related to the transmission and 2 year 24000 mile warranty). I've been trying to get a ballpark idea of whether or not this is a decent price, and everything I read is between 750-1k for a rebuild. Problem is I don't know if this is just for dropping the transmission off at the shop, or the whole car.
So my question is this: Is 1250 a good price for a rebuild taking into account all random parts included, 2yr 24000 mile warranty, and just dropping the car off? Oh, and I guess I should mention it's the stock TH350 in an '81.

that price should include R and R of the trans at the least.
can't really say what it will cost.
been a long time since I had recent pricing.
I do know if you take in your trans, 1k should get you a performance rebuild.
good luck

What is R and R? As is I just gave him the car so he will need to take it out, rebuild it, and put it back in.

I had a friend who is a master tranny guy do the M20 in my 74.
He rebuilt it completely, bearings seals, shafts, and even some of the gears. The cost for parts alone were $900, for cheap made in China parts, or $1200 for genuine GM Parts.
Olive in Canada, and that was 5 years ago. That was his cost for parts, he did it for a couple hundred labor, I had pulled the tranny when I pulled the motor to rebuild it.
Hope that helps.

1250.00 for a th350 is steep .. I would think 950.00 would be a fair deal with a torque converter and all labor. If you have a local corvette club , visit there web page and I am betting they have a shop they recommend

You want to come to an agreement with the shop. Are they rebuilding your original tranny, or replacing it? Ensure they know what you want.

It depends on the part of the country I guess.
I vote steep
for just the rebuild you should be in the 350-500 range and then R/R maybe 300 650-800 range
I just had a T-350 done here in FL last week and it was 650 that was R/R new converter, JW clutches nice stock+ tranny for 400HP small block in SWB Chevy P/U.
I know its a Vette but shop around I think a lower price is out there.
If you are a do-it-yourself guy pull it and take it to the shop for a bench rebuild
Good luck

I agree, it definitely depends on where you are located. I went throuh this last year. Here in the DC area, I got quotes ranging from $1k to $2,500. And that was if I removed the unit and delivered it to the shop. I asked one shop why a common TH400 was so expensive to rebuild. The guy told me that it's not, but the time spent doing a cheap rebuild cost him time doing a rebuild on an expensive transmission. Opportunity cost I guess. For my money though, especially considering the PIA it is to R&R the tranny in our cars, $1,200 to remove, rebuild and replace would be a value.
