Default 1973 Corvettes with aluminum wheels from the factory??

I saw this brochure image and noticed that the car had the aluminum type wheels on it, and thought that they had not come out till the 1976 year. Is there any specific wheel date code that make these wheels 1973 specific?

Also, I know it is a fat chance, but does anyone possibly know which car this was in this photo? Maybe a VIN number?

I have a 73, so I've looked at this page in the black book hundreds of times. If I'm remembering correctly there was a very small number that came with the Al wheels. I think I heard that some problem was found so not many got out of the shop with them.

Somebody with their black book on hand will correct me.

There were supposedly a total of four cars that received the YJ8 wheels in '73. The VINs are not known and none of have ever appeared and be documented by tank sheet or similar. There were a number of sets that were sold over the counter by GM dealers, I think about 6 sets of those have been found over the years.

The wheels have a unique casting number, paint pattern in the centre area and different lug nuts.

These were not released for production untill the 1976 model year. The early lugnuts had a black center.

I had ordered the aluminum wheels for my 73 when I ordered it in 8/72. Was told later that there were problems and never got mine.

My neighbor in Miami (Christ Fergis AIA) had a green '73 coupe with the aluminum wheels. I saw them on the Road and Track photos on the Mid Engine Vette of the future and then he showed up with them on his new car . The car was purchased at Larry Costley Chevrolet on Kendall Dr across from the Dadeland mall. He also had a bad '66 and later a '78 Indy L82!

I have a mounted poster of the picture shown, which I think may have come from a dealer.
Great info on the wheels.
One thing always bothered me about the picture - Note the crossed flags emblem on the hood - when was this changed to the round emblem?

I'd be interested to know that too- My 73 has the crossed flags & looks to be original (?)....
