Default Passenger side mirror removal

So I'm trying to swap out this broken sport-mirror with a manual chrome mirror. The mirror had broken glass and a cut tilt-control when I bought the car, so I just assume swap it for the better-looking chrome mirror.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the dang thing off, though. The driver's side mirror has a screw and looks easy to remove. This passenger mirror is attached differently though. It appears to be bolted in and the only way to get to the bolts is to remove the door window glass

Anyone know of any tricks? I don't have an AIM for these doors. These are 78+ doors that someone put on my 74.

There are a few threads on this floating around and a few differing opinions on it. Some will tell you to get a aim (assembly manual) but that doesn't really tell you HOW to do it. I think you have to take your door panel off, drop your window down a little, and fabricate a narrow socket with a grinder.

Hmm.. I took the door panel off but there's no way to get to the right-hand bolt without removing the glass it seems like.

Sport mirrors mount with two studs in the base of the mirror. In your pic with the door panel off, you're getting close. The nuts on the studs are difficult to reach.

81 shown; other years are the same with the exception of the control cable.

Thanks Mike. Yeah, there's just no getting to that right-hand bolt without taking the window out, that I can see.. and I have no idea how to do that. Everything on these damn cars is so hard

If you have to remove the glass [surely there's a way to get at those nuts without doing that...], make sure you mark the precise location of all fasteners, so that you can get it back in the right position. And, with the glass out, you can grease/lube up all the rollers, etc. in that door assembly.

Try lowering the door glass down as far as it will go using the lower stops. If you've been living right, that might give you enough wiggle room to reach the nut.

Success!!

After removing the fabric "bumper" that holds the window glass in place, I was able to wedge it back and get the nut out using this magical tool I created. It's a 1/4" wrench and 7/16" drill socket ground down.
