That Corvette is purely a neighborhood car and taking a highly modified, near drag-strip car cross country is not an undertaking for the timid. Look up Hot Rod Magazine's trip with the blown yellow Crusher Camaro (named because it was saved from the crusher). It was a heck of an adventure, with numerous breakdowns and ensuing hilarity. If you've got mech skills, money and time, I say go for it, but expect the unexpected, cause it won't be like slogging your Toyota Corolla, that's for sure. It'd be best to bring someone along too...

You need to trailer it home, you will wear out the tires they are soft.
You will wear out your wallet, gas is expensive and a lot of blower cars don't run on pump gas or at a minimum need and additive
and with a 3.73 on a 4 speed you will put some wear and tear on that old girl for sure.
In reality this plan has a very high potential to end in disaster

Hi,
Since the bank owned it, perhaps they'll make you a Home Equity Loan for gas to make sure they never see it again.
Regards,
Alan

You must not have much real world knowledge of the type of car you're buying. This is a dragstrip / car show / garage queen, that has probably seen most of its traveling on a trailer. Just because it CAN be driven on the street, does not mean it is a real, driveable, street car.
There is not enough roon in a Vette to carry the tools and spares you need to supprt this trip. Just put it on a trailer, and enjoy the car when you get it home.

I considered driving my stock 427/390 Vette home halfway across the country when I first bought it and when I ran the numbers the 93 octane gas alone to get there and back was more costly than paying for a covered trailer door to door. Not to mention the expense of breakdowns, etc. That car is going to crap out after 30 miles.

I seriously doubt you can get 9MPG on that motor with the rear car has.
I have 406 roller engine with not even the half the HP with 4.11 gears and getting 9MPG so there is no way that vette can do 9MPG.

Melting Slicks
That car was built to have a range of 1/4 mile. My big concern other that the price of gas would be the cooling system. Having that engine overheat would be pricey.

I think you should trailer it - and here's why I think that:
1) the car might get 5 mpg
2) the valve springs needed to control valve bounce in the motor would tear up those hydraulic roller lifters in 500 miles or less
3) it's a 40 year old car, but those words "I'm just helping the bank sell it" are a huge warning sign - he has no idea whether the car would make it out of the parking lot; just because 40k was spent on the car/motor doesn't mean that it was 40k well-spent
4) bank owned - people who lose their cars/houses/wives to a bank (okay, maybe not wives ) do not take good care of the item - thus something major could be lurking just out of sight that could really cause problems
5) you're taking a tremendous risk of completely destroying your investment - those cars require specific care, and a great deal of knowledge to build... you have no idea whether or not it was properly done... all it takes is a fuel leak or a short and your car will be on YouTube burning to the ground.
WITH that said - you could do it, but have someone following with a truck and trailer so if something does go wrong; your car won't get stolen while you're hiking to get help (this happens a lot)

I'm a total idiot but this car will be "blown" if you drive it more than a few miles, IMO. Doesn't look exactly like a cruising around kind of car....be careful
