Default 1968 coupe l88? bb? what do I have?

[IMG][/IMG]

Help I've been working on this 1968 coupe getting it ready to sell however, all the reading I've done on your site it could be something special....here's what I found.

[1968 corvette coupe... (manufactured jun 13 1968 )
*radio delete
*heater delete
*single line gas feed
*7 leave rear spring w/swaybar
*big block tach(6.5 red line)

No J-56 brakes believed replaced
No build sheet under the fuel tank ...tank looks replaced
427 and trans replaced with a 350 hi performance package (1973/350/z28)

Was stored for 15 years , is now running, and drivable, (rebuilt carb, unfrozen clutch, new brakes)
But needs to be gone though to make a daily driver.

Has L88 imprint on the hood under the paint

thinking about selling but sure what I have.

thanks in advance for all your help
new to the forum..be gentle

The hood is not a real L88 hood. Its an after market "long hood" that people put on to eliminate the wiper doors on 68-72. It doesnt fit very well, either.

More pics would probably provide more bad news.

The rocker panels are off a later model car, too.

Does the color match the trim tag? What does the data plate on the shifter console say (if there is one)?

What you have is an NOM coupe with a small block in it, with a custom hood. Sorry. Its history coukld be interesting... run the VIN online to see if there's anything remarkable related to it.

L-88's had the 427 individual numerals on the hood not a L-88 emblem. Your car also has a hole for the antenna. Also. you say this is a June built car. The outside mirror is more in a position to be an earlier car. It's more forward on the door whereas later cars had them positioned more aft than forward.

It does not have the wider L88 fenders.
Seems nothing is matching at this car - and seriously it doesn´t even matter if it was a BB or not. Its just may be important to you, but not to the value in this mixed up condition of the car and parts.

There were no L-88 fenders. L-88 cars left the factory looking just like their small block cousins.

You could purchase fender flares through Chevrolet parts dealers if you wanted them. Dr. Dobbins' book shows several of the off road items GM was selling over the coutner. Good book. Worth the price of a copy.

Does the car have a rear sway bar?

Are the half shafts attached to the differential with straps or caps?

BB cars used caps and had a rear anti sway bar, these would be 2 indications that would help you determine the cars past.

Unless this particular car has some history of significance, something unusual, valuable, there's no collector value to be had.

If it was originally configured with a big block and IF the past owners kept the parts unique to a big block, there may be value if your intent is to reinstall a big blck, no need to chase down parts. Otherwise it has no special value over another NOM IMHO. Not to say the car isn't valuable to somebody, just not valueable to collectors.

There's an old saying I made up a few weeks ago that all old Corvettes missing their original engines were born as big blocks, and 140% of those were L88s.

This car has a 427 cu in sticker on the air cleaner so it must be true.

The trim tag indicates that this car was originally painted British Green with a black leather interior.

So let me ask you all this........
If I left it as it sets with the 350 in it , What would you est. the selling price to be on the open market?
I know thats a broad question but you guys are the all knowing and deal with these cars all day long . What would be your best guess.

I picked this up as an investment to fix and resale but I'm not sure just how much more I should put into it if as you say its just a noe vette.

thanks again
clueless in the vette world.

I noticed this add a few days ago. Glad you found this site to get the correct answers.

Why are you selling it?

The way I see it is you may have a 427 Car with a really wrong motor. After Market hood, Broken Radio, heater, antenna.

Great candidate Big Block upgrade because the hood allows more clearance but I'd say you have a project car.

Value? I wouldn't give you more than $15K and that would depend on the quality of the paint.

Seller says the paint is good- at 10 yards.

I find it strange that despite the opinions given above, the seller is still trying to pass it off as (maybe) an L88.

I agree.....plus it sure looks like there is a radio hole in the dash...as well as the antenna hole.

I think someone got snookered and wants to try and get out of it.

Shouldn't jump into investment builds without knowing what you're looking at.

That said..it could make a real nice toy for someone....might even be an original BB car if we could see more details...

You guys have it all wrong. I'm not trying to pass this 68 off as an L88 I'm asking if that's what it is.
I have no Idea what this vette is. As I read the posts on this site to check for this and that I started to thing perhaps it was big block born vette. That being said I'm just trying see what the selling value of these cars are. I really don't want to give it away but I don't want to over state it either. that's what all questions are about. I didn't get snookered I picked it up for an very fair price . Just seeing where I am with it that's all.
I do what to say thank you all your comments and guidance . Just trying to figure out what I have....thanks
