Default My 1970 ground up project journal.

Well now's as good a time as any to start my build thread. I've had the car sitting for a while now and finally started to make some headway with it. This is a father son project that I bought a couple of years ago at a car show from someone that was showing a c4 vette. It's a 1970 350/350 #matching car.

I have the build sheet to confirm this, as well as a list of options which apparently are pretty rare for the year. Including a rear defroster (which makes it rarer than the LT-1 based on production numbers )

Laguna gray exterior / saddle vinyl interior, deluxe wheel covers (planning on using rally wheels though)

M21 trans, AC , power windows , deluxe door pads to list some stuff off of the top of my head.

So far we've got most of the body work finished, just fine tuning left, as well as a ton of priming/ blocking. Hoping to pull the body in about 2 weeks or so.

Note the rear body panel. I'll be using an original set of 1969 side exhaust covers.

Tomorrow I'll post some pictures of the parts I've acquired for the project so far. I'll be posting here regularly to update, and to ask for advice as I go.

Hi Vv,
This looks like a very nice project, and should lead to you having a very nice 70 to enjoy!
It's great fun to see what people are working on especially when there are lots of pictures!
GOOD LUCK!
Regards,
Alan

Hello Vinnie
Looks like a nice car to work with and diffidently more car than I started with. I see the BB hood on a small block 350 I am thinking LT-1 Did the 350/350 come with a BB hood?
Keep us posted.

Somewhere down the line the hood must have been swapped. I'm still wondering if it's a GM BB/LT1 hood or reproduction, I'm not quite sure how to tell the difference. Either way It's a much nicer hood IMO, and it doesn't make much sense for me to go out and buy SB hood when I enjoy this one so much. I've been toying with the Idea of using the LT-1 stripe on the hood as well, I haven't quite decided yet.

I was also toying with the Idea of completing my 4 bolt #512 casting late 70/ early 71 LS6 454 block for the project that I originally bought with the intentions of swapping into my chevelle. I decided against it because I would need to purchase a whole new set of brackets, hunting each correct piece down, and finish building the motor. I already have a 357 ready to go that came out of a 1977 vette. It has an 010 casting number, which is the same as the motor I'm pulling out, and the only number easily seen under the hood so it will still retain the factory look even down to that detail. I'll be keeping the original motor greased up and shrink wrapped for a later rebuild (probably 20 years down the line) when I decide to bring the car completely back to factory specs. (and apply for documentation)

Thanks for the kind words of inspiration guys! I'll try to update as much as possible.

Laguna Gray with Saddle interior? That combination is a little 'unusual', I think [a "warm" interior color but a "cool" exterior paint]. If you keep it that way and you are building the car to "factory stock" condition, that color combination might add value, for the right buyer.

Have you decided what you want to do, yet?

Vinnie
The hood looks like it fits really good and not all aftermarkets do. I personally like it. I would rather have that than the L-88 that I have now.

I'm going to keep it the factory color combo. Probably using dark saddle in leather. I've NEVER seen a picture of laguna gray with a saddle interior so I think it will be a little more unique that way. If anyone has such a photograph please post it so I can get an idea of what it looks like. I got mine with a 77 interior in gray, with most of the original saddle pieces painted to match.

The hood fits really good because my father is a master in his craft lol. I'm really lucky to have a father who has so much experience in paint and body work. It wasn't to far off to begin with but he's been able to tweak it to sit perfectly, definitely better than it came from the factory. I still need to check to see if I can find any numbers/markings on the hood, I'd love to find out it is a GM replacement.

I found this car on ebay and I noticed the front black plastic splitter. Is this a factory piece that I should be looking for or is this an aftermarket add on?

perhaps this piece? is this standard? http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=26241

I need advice on how to remove the gauge cluster (tach/speedo) There is a collar around the steering column that's making it difficult to lift the entire piece out, and I want to reuse this part of the dash so I'm not looking to break it. Any tips?

I think you need to drop the steering column. Just a couple of bolts, I believe...
