power steering pump question...
Is there supposed to be some kind of gasket between the bottom of the cap and the housing where the cap attaches? I have a power steering leak and I think its coming from the cap, when I checked the cap there is no kind of gasket/seal inside the bottom of the cap. Thanks for any help.

My guess is 'no', the cap is spring loaded and I don't ever remember seeing a gasket on mine. I changed my P/S pump out last week. It was leaking from the pulley shaft. It's not a hard job if you have the correct tools. My pump had been changed to a later model pump with the pressed on pulley so I bought a puller from Harbor Freight $20. The original 70' pump has a nut retaining the pulley - lucky me. The pulley came off the old and onto the new without any problems, but you must have the puller.
I would be interested to know if there is supposed to be a gasket under the filler cap too.

I stopped by one of the corvette repair shops and they showed me a cap from an 80, mine is an 81. There IS a rubber piece under the cap that makes the seal between the underside of the cap and the housing.
I cut a piece of rubber I had here and now I have a seal.

Yup, I just got off my lazy butt and looked at mine, I hadn't looked
at that close before. It looks like the seal or gasket is the total fit of the
cap. Always learning.
