Default Gas fumes when in garage

We have a '77 and when we drive it it runs good but when we park it in the garage we get terrible gas fumes that filter into the house thru the a/c unit. When parked outside there is no odor of gas. Any suggestions.

First thing that comes to mind is the charcoal canister, or lack there of it, that is located under the washer fluid tank in the drivers side fender. Perhaps its missing or hoses are no longer hooked up.

Edit. I would also recommend getting a 77 AIM and make surel the correct plumbing for this is there and in good shape if this turns out to be the problem.

The bigger issue is why does your a/c unit circulate gasses/air from your garage throughout your house? If you had a fire in your garage, it would also circulate it through your house.
Very dangerous, call in a HVAC specialist, and seal it off properly..do it now!

As far as why your car smells of fuel when shut off, could be many reasons..inspect for its source (noticeable leaks under car?, fuel inlet, fuel pump, charcoal canister, etc.).

I have the same issue. Mine seems to be worse when the fuel tank is full. I started looking yesterday, and found that there is a fuel/vapor separator mounted on the tank, and it has two hoses running from it. One hose routes fuel back into the tank, and the other hose hooks into the steel lines that route up to the vapor canister. I seem to get a heavier smell of fumes at the back of the car, so am going to look at that more closely. Unfortunately getting at it may be difficult since it is mounted to the top driver's side of the tank. This may have to wait until winter when there is a good chance that I am going to replace the fuel tank since the current tank has quite a lot of surface rust. Inside looks clean though. I'll let you know what I find when I can try to stck my head up there to look at the separator and hoses. The hose going to the steel line does look like it needs replaced, so that will probably be my first order of business if I can reach it.

Have you checked the fuel cap gasket, they fall out and into the tank on occasion.

Its fairly easy to drop the tank, and if the inside is good you could paint the exterior with silver por 15

I have same exact issue on my 81...my charcoal canister is currently disconnected (Guy I bought it from took it off)...Sounds like I need to conenct it back, my fumes dont leak into the house but im paranoid they will and I have a 2 year old in the house so I'm even more paranoid...plus wife would kill me if the house got any kind of smell in it LOL.

on my 81...does it go in same location? Driver side...and I should see some lines (rubber or steel) hanging there? ** I hope they are capped off...maybe not and thus my heavy fuel smell....?

Pretty much.

Hopefully, but that depends on what the PO left you.

The assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows how the canister is installed and how the lines run.

I was having the same problem with fumes. I found out recently when I had problems with my sender unit, that myy rubber fuel line that connects to the sender/fuel pickup had started to perish.

The separator is a ball valve and if it fails gas will run to the canister instead of just fumes if parked on an incline with a full tank

AHAAAAAA! So...charcoal cannisters aren't evil after all---just the checkvalve.....that explains the 6 ounces of gasoline in the charcoal canister!

I don't need the gas smell in the garage, either. Time to order replacement parts!

X2

Mine was a very small leak and the fuel would evaporate before dripping to the ground, it was kinda hard to locate because it was so small. But it would sure make the garage smell of gas.

I had a 73 with the same heavy gas smell. After doing a lot of the checks suggested, mine turned out to be the lines that go from the tank to the steel lines on the chassis. This is by the passenger side muffler. They were cracked and leaking a little bit of gas, but giving off a lot of smell.

Never have been. They prevent fuel vapors from venting to the atmosphere.

my vote is rubber fuel line hose at the fuel pump is leaking. that is the point where there is movement in the hose from the engine movement bouncing around. especially if you have a weak or broken motor mount.
