I always post this site for VIN decoding
Yup L48 engne unless the numbers do not match on the block and it is not hard to buy a L82 engine then drop it in the car. Did it with a 1972 El Camino and again with a 1976 Malibu Classic. Blew the Nylon Timing gears in the L48s and dropped L82 engines into the both these cars.

The engine identification suffix on the block is a reliable source. What does it say?
