Oil pressure blowing out oil filter seal

Oil pressure blowing out oil filter seal
Just got my 77 Corvette ready to fire it up for the first time and as soon as it starts the oil pressure pegs the oil pressure gauge and blows out the filter seal. I tried a couple of new filters and it does the exact same thing.
I read something about the oil pump pressure relief valve but how do I check it? Any ideas on what else might be causing the filters to blow out?

do you have the stock engine and what brand and filter part number are you using? There maybe a bypass valve in the filter other than that oil pressure is controlled by a spring in the oil pump.

PCV on the valve cover is still there, the filters are STP S8873. The relief valve on the oil filter housing is fine and not stuck.
The engine is stock but had a Rajay turbo on it when I got it.

You are tigthening filter 3/4 of a turn after the gasket touches the filter mounting pad? What viscosity oil are you using? What exactly do you mean you are firing it up for the 1st time, what was done to it?

The oil is 10w-40, the car was stood for a long time we just got it ready to be started for the first time (head gaskets, valve covers etc). We installed the oil filter properly but within 3 seconds of the car firing up the oil filter seal blows out and the pressure gauge in the car goes to 80 plus.
Going to take the oil pan off and check the pump, I read there is a oil relief valve on the pump.

do you have a high pressure oil pump installed? those things cause nothing but problems.

I had this happen to me once when driving the car, I had decided to try 20w-50 oil in it and got on the gas before it was warmed up and it sprayed out around the filter gasket, all down the underside of the car. Thought I had a much bigger problem than it was, switched to 10w-30, not a problem since.

I had a similar problem with the oil filter seal blowing out........
When I removed the previous filter, I didn't realize that the black rubber gasket on the old oil filter was stuck to the engine block....I installed the new oil filter----the car ran a couple minutes--then oil sprayed everywhere from the "extra" rubber gasket blowing out.
That's probably not your problem because of the oil gauge pegging, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Forgive me for being Captain Obvious here.
Wipe both mating surfaces clean first, and only put engine oil on the filter gasket, not grease. Grease will allow the oil pressure to blow out the gasket.
But you knew that.

The oil pump pressure relief valve is stuck is what your problem is.It is part of the oil pump, you will have to drop the oil pan to change the pump. It's not too bad of a job.I would also recomend the molded 1 piece oil pan gasket when you put it back together.I had same problem on my '69 that had been sitting, man what a mess that makes when they blow the gasket out

This is one of three things:
1. One too many oil filter seals
2. Oil filter bypass valve is stuck
3. Oil pressure relieve valve in the Oil pump is stuck and is filled up with gunk/
How do I know? Happened in a 1958 Chevy I had last year:

It was the oil pump pressure relief valve that was stuck. Cleaned it out and put it back together and it works fine. Now got to do the lifters and set the rocker arms.
Thanks guys.
