Default Pace Cars @ BJ

Anyone catch what two 1978 Pace Cars sold for at the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson auction? Both extremely low-milege.

Those two were possibly assembled in the same week (#2073 and #2676). Combined mileage for the pair is less than 50 miles.
Geez.

VIN 2073 L82 M38 sold for $52,800...17 miles with MSO

VIN 2676 L82 M21 FE7 sold for $82,500...30 miles MSO still in the wrappers. I think I've seen this one on the judging field. I have it documented in my files of Pace Cars.

These are incredible sales prices for 78 Pace Cars and in the past year I've seen prices in this range...at auctions. Makes it interesting. But than I've seen other owners, like Karol above where its real work to squeeze $32k out of buyers. Maybe we are seeing two classes of buyers with high-end showing up at these high-end auctions...believing they are getting a great deal.

I really believe you hit the nail on the head. This auction does indeed bring buyers with money. That week in Phoenix, is the B-J, Goodings, Russo & Steele, And several other smaller auctions at some of the local casinos.
When a fellow even talks about the worth of his car at this website, it's all lowball numbers. Remember, a car is only going to get bid up if more than 1 person wants it. And sometimes ego drives the bidding.

Guys, help me out here. What's the attraction for spending that kinda money on those cars? Obviously those cars weren't driven (much), so the previous owners didn't get any driving pleasure for their purchase price/expenditure. And given the prices here it looks like it was a pretty poor financial investment too. Ignoring any storage costs and 36 years of insurance premium costs it looks like only about a 4 or 5 percent rate of return on the purchase price (assuming the original owner was actually able to not pay over MSRP for the car).

Makes no sense to me.

That is one thing that the auctioneers get paid to do... Create a bidding frenzy to encourage those with money to spare to spend more on a car than it is worth in the real world. I don't say that to insult anyone. After all, I have Corvettes, too. But many of those cars (any of them) would never bring that kind of money except under those circumstances.

It helps those who sell and hurts those who buy. Simple. Aside from my Corvettes, I've always wanted two other cars to replace those I had when I was much younger and needed something to drive... A 1965 Chrysler 300 and a 1978 Z/28. Both were cheap when I had no money and now both are priced in the stupid range. Oh, well.

I attended the Mecum auction and witnessed a 1978 Pace Car from the Roger Judski Corvette Collection (Roger's Corvette) go for $75k. This Pace Car is exceptional. Still has its MSO, seven miles on the odometer, decals, wheel caps and front spoilers still stowed in the rear storage compartment. Very nice and particularly underneath. Markings were as one would expect.

I'm concluding that buyers will pay high-end $ for the best-of-the-best 1978 Pace Cars which suggests they are coming into their own.

Wish I had one. Just FYI. A guy I used to run around with back in the day sold a 1968 L88 Vette in Florida at Barret-Jackson for $880,000! Wow!

Those are prices that are nuts.
