Default Help me identify this engine stamping on my 1970

PIcked up a C3 that is a bit of a mystery engine. It is/was a 350/350 car 4 speed. It has a muncie (not sure of model) with case stampings 3885010 indicating a 1965-67 unit. The block has the 3970010 casting indicating anywhere from 1969-79 build. The best I could make out the date casting was "J20 0" or "j20 D" The serial number stamp does not correlate with anything I've looked up. See the picture. Best I can tell it says "CF 3A43" with a strange larger stamp of perhaps "40" - not sure.
Just trying to date the engine and type of 350. Have not checked the heads yet. VIN 194370S41059 See the pics.

Certainly not an assembly line type stamp. The casting date indicates October 20 1970, long after your car was built. The pad surface appears to display some broaching marks which indicates it hasn't gone through a typical machine shop overhaul and decking.

If the stamp begins with CE3 vs. CF3 it might be a GM crate engine from 1973 but this would not line up with a 1970 casting date.

No telling what's inside or who installed it.

I'll have to check the date stamp again. The year digit was a bit hammered. Looked like "D" or a "O" but maybe it could be a crate engine from 1973 if it is a poor stamping representing CE3.

The blocks made no difference whether it was high or low compression - did they? It was the heads and pistons that dictated this? I'm wondering now if my heads are original to the engine or car.

The same 3970010 block was used for the lowliest of grandpa's grocery-getters all the way up to LT!.

I think some of those old 69 or 70 350 had four holt mains if I remember in both the 300 and 350hp version least in Corvettes.

Default OK - it was a "3"

So I think it is resolved - a crate engine from 1973 based on re-studying the casting date stamp. Now, about these heads - 820 heads on a small block? Any ideas? Other stamp is GM K18

Most likely they're 3998920. Used in '72-'74. 1.94" and 1.5" valves.

K18 was the conveyor number, not a date code.
