Default Owner to Reunite with Stolen Corvette After 33 Years

What are the chances of reuniting with something you lost more than thirty years ago? Probably as slim as a penny's-worth of gold foil. What are the chances of finding a Corvette that’s been missing since 1981? As likely as the most interesting man in the world doing something uninteresting. As likely as Moses parting the seas just for the sake of providing us an encore presentation ... I'm talking flatout miracle to the 10th power.

Well, it looks like 71-year-old Detroiter George Talley is dealing with a 10th-power miracle. Last week, he received a call informing him that his 1979 Corvette (like the one pictured) that was stolen 33 years ago in the Motor City had been found in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Great news. I hate thieves - hope it's in good enough condition to enjoy it.

Question - how did this car become registered, titled and driven all these years if it was listed as a stolen car? And, who owned it when they found it? What's the back story?

I think I remember reading that the car was tagged with a bogus VIN and that's how it was under the radar for all those years. I believe the car was still in a good shape when it was found.

Cool story, though!

It is likely that the car changed hands a few times since then. If so, was the current unsuspecting owner our their money?

Sad that it happened at all. Amazing blessing that it was found.
