Eljay,
I believe that the alternator bracket on my car is the correct one for this LS-5. It is the same bracket that came on the car when I purchased it new in 1970. The alternator shown in the pics is a replacement as I had sent the original to be rebuilt. The original alternator will be reinstalled shortly on that same bracket. The car does not have power steering.

Ah, the lack of power steering must be the difference, if you look at the pick of jr9170s engine that is the bracket I have on my car but mine has power steering. When you said that you were the original owner, you are a great reference as to what is correct or not. Also your ignition shielding is correct? That is what I have, but jr9170's looks like it's for a small block? And I'm not picking on any ones car just trying to learn what's correct. Thanks

Eljay,
The car does not have power brakes or power steering. The ignition shielding is correct and allows for grounding the braided spark plug wires inside the cover (the other end of the braid grounds at the valve cover bolts). The car was ordered by the local dealer for his stock. I saw it on his lot and loved the color and engine package. I assume he kept the options to a minimum to keep the sticker price down. I've often wondered why the dealer ordered the $158 deluxe leather interior package on an otherwise low-option vehicle. The car did not come from the factory with the aux hardtop. I purchased the top a year later from another owner and painted it to match the laguna grey. As such, the rear deck is not drilled for the hardtop center bolt. The folding cloth top is black.

My car was built on day one. My engine is original and here is an old pic of the IGN shielding. My car was a no power brake or steering as well. Although I see PS in my future. You had it all these years and you never added that???

Eljay, clean looking engine compartment you got there. Aftrer the mid 12000's vins we had the dual snorkel air cleaners as far as the ignition shielding I have seen my type with the dual snorkel on the late vins and I have seen a few with the box type like yours with the dual snorkel.Because or the low build numbers on the 70's some very early70's have chrome valve covers, not the orange painted steel ones the other 71'have.

Just checked the NCRS judging guide and it says up to vin 16,716 had box type ignition shield,BUT later ones could have have the 71-72 type like mine has.Maybe we should start a thread with vins and what type of ignition shield and type of air cleaner on their LS5's.
