Default spring rating

hello all,
my 79 c3 came with a composite rear spring, and wondering if there is any way to determine the rating. there's only one mark, a "17" stamped on the bottom near one end. it's black, the thinnest section measures 10mm.

no luck searching, many thx!

I think there are multiple manufacturers of replacement springs and they are unmarked so you may not be able to find an answer.

ah, thought that may be the case.

am after a smooth ride that's a little flatter in the corners. the delco "performer" shocks may be original, and am considering my options to replace them. am also considering upgrading the F sway bar and adding a rear. i'd like to balance the shocks / sway bar / spring if possible.

i'll keep reading, many thx!

back from vaca, then kid off to college, then got my firewood in, then off to maine. sheesh!

anyhow, here's a coupla pics.

edit: pic was taken while opposite side was jacked up to scotch-bright and paint the framerails, the clearance from spring to exhaust is actually about 1 1/2inches.

Would that have been Hampton Beach, NH? I was a lifeguard there in 1978 after college and before the USAF. Great times with my "new to me" '71 coupe that I'm presently restoring...

yup, at hampton beach. we usually go for 4 days of so each summer, after that am bored. a nice long, sandy beach for walking/picking. a great time, with the exception of the canadans and their "banana hammocks". a little unsettling.

Your spring is NOT from VB&P. It appears to be a TRW spring (Muskegon Brakes - who answered your post earlier - manufactures/distributes now) OR it may be a Hyperco spring, which is similar to the TRW but has a flatter downward curve.

Try getting back with Muskegon.

With that 'glass spring, there's a lot less internal friction (self-damping) within the spring than the steely. Those Delcos just ain't gonna cut it. I highly recommend the Bilstein Sports on all 4 corners. They're also good for 100,000+ miles with little to no loss of damping.
