Plasti-Dip'd my '79
Not sure what kind of reaction to expect on this forum when plasti-dip is mentioned, but I did it to my C3 this weekend. I'm not happy with the results but I think I could do it again and get results I do like. I'm not ready to do the actual body work that I would need to do before investing in a real paint job, and the old peeling paint was really getting to me.
Anthracite Grey Plasti Dip. Here it is.
This is what the pearlizer did, I hated it and sprayed the grey over it again:
Finished:
What I learned about Plasti Dip:
The Pearlizer is a waste of money.
THE THINNER THE BETTER with the coats. There is some considerable clumping that means I'm going to be peeling it back off and redoing it. You can see it here:
Everything I read says to do 4-5 coats. After the 2nd super thin coat I wasn't seeing how only 4-5 coats would do it so I adjusted the gun to give me a little more. That was a mistake. I'd say to do at least 6-8 coats as thin as possible to get the best finish.

Yeah, the ability to peel it off is the only reason I did it. There is a small list of things I'd do differently to make it look smoother.
As-is, I get smiles and looks rumbling down the road.
Washing, masking, prepping, and spraying all took about 4-5 hours.
You can see how it looked before in this pic:

Now that you have experience with plastic dip, how well do you think it would hold up on wheels. I'm thinking of using plastic dip on my aluminum wheels if it would last for a while.

What did it cost for all materials involved? Mine has flaking, peeling paint, and it'll be a while before I have the cabbage saved up to get a proper paint job. If it's reasonable, I'd do it...

I used the pro kit from dipyourcar.com
I used the pearlizer and really wished I had bought the gloss. I can't comment on the longevity, but I've heard that it can last quite a while on wheels.

Not bad. Much better than old, peeling paint. We just done ours. World Rally blue (candy pearls) over flat black. For our 1st time painting anything, I am pleased with it.
Did you know that you can spray naptha on your rough, bumpy spots and they will lay down? Same thing with smoothing out any scratches.
I know it's not for every one, but fits our needs at the present time.

I put 8 coats on my bike...the next town over has a constant BOLO for my white and red R1 , so I change all the white fairings and tank to a different color every couple months. My favorite color combo is gun metal gray with the clear.

My wheels with plastidip and glossifier
Wheels with glossifier
fender hash marks and top of hood scoop sprayed with Plastidip
It is holding up pretty good, the hash marks need to be redone due to a cat scratching one and peeling it up in a small spot.

Spider Cracks
I've got a '77 I'm thinking about dipping. I was prepping for paint and the spider cracks keep coming back. Too many to grind out individually and I'm not in a situation to replace the front end just yet.
Did you have spider cracks n your paint and if so do you think this would cover them?
Thanks!
