Default Electrical problem

I installed a new alternator. when I connect the battery the battery light comes on. I checked the fuses, they are ok.
When I disconnect the alternator the battery light goes out. With the alternator connected when I put the key in to on, not start, the battery light goes out but the charge gauge makes a clicking noise.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
