Default Converting techometer to electric

1971 4 speed, 350/350. (project)

I thinking of converting the tachometer to electric. I did one about 20 years ago for a friend, using a salvage/downer tech, Autolight I think and mounting it behind the original. Swapped the hands with JB weld.
It was a "not so precision" job. the Tech was close up to 4000, then started to get more off scale.
It would be nice to be able to get one done.
Does anyone sell the conversion or do the conversion.

I also want to do the Oil pressure gauge.

IT's not a "queen" but will be a "daily driver" close to stock.
Getting back into it after 20+ years.

thanks

Stock 75-77 tachs will fit and won't require any re-engineering. They use HEI. You can also make a stock electric oil pressure gauge conversion.

This is what I did when I went HEI in my 73. Bought a 75+ tach and swapped the motor in to my 73 gauge. There was a tiny bit of modification as the screws that mount the motor to the gauge face are farther apart on the later model tachs. I just made little cuts with my dremel and bent the "ears" on the motor in to make up the distance. You'll need a filter, but the vendors sell them pretty cheap. Powered mine with the 'acc' terminal in the fuse panel.

Do a search here. There was a pretty good write up on this.

I did the 75-77 tach on my '71. Nice thing is the face plates are available separately for quite cheap, and they come with different red lines. Since I've done some mods to my LS-5 I set the new red line at 6,000.

thanks

It's better than the original conversion I did. It looked good but was off scale , real off scale over 4000.

I did hook it into the switched Acc as you did .
I don't like OIL in the passenger compartment - bad experience as a kid.

Thanks

That dash looks real good.

I wish there was something like this available when I converted my tach for the LS engine swap. I had to buy a 75 tach on ebay, get a 50% refund from the seller when I found that the tach board was burned up, buy a new board from Willcox, fabricate the mountings for the above-mentioned alignment differences.

Just remember to have the tach pulse number set to 3 when you have the ECU tuned.

The "Out of Stock" status on the Zip website is a little concerning.

NOW ALL WE NEED IS A SPEEDOMETER CONVERSION TO ELECTRIC!

I would start looking, but may pretend to look and I'm sure one will pop up.

It would help the guys with the E street conversion or LS and electric trans conversions. I'm seeing more and more of these conversions.

Don't be alarmed by the out of stock. I sold the stock really fast. We came up with these to the manufacture over a year ago and I knew it would be popular once word got out, but I had no idea. I do want to do a speedo as well, I am actually in need of one for a kit that we are making for using a 6L80 transmission. Speedo is an issue though because of the odometer.

Anyone who uses new gauges ends up with a 0 odometer. It's up to the individual to handle that issue. I'm using a Cable-X box. It works OK but it takes some trial and error to get the speedometer to read correctly. If someone came up with a module that incorporated GPS for speed sensing and a motor drive that auto-calibrated the speedo needle that would be sweet. Eliminate the drivetrain variables and just show the actual rate of speed. I know this would not be an easy task.

Default Wow

That kit by Zip is pretty damn cool, and about time I'd say, way to go Zip! Here's how I did mine, old school style now I guess. When I finished it probably wasn't much cheaper than the kit by Zip.

The speedometer conversion would be even sweeter. Is trying to keep the original odometer dials the issue? I see lots of electronic speedometer gauges with analog odometer dials. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Here's one to copy, it says it's electric but the odometer looks analog: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Classi...eter,7385.html

Get it done Zip, I want it!

Does anyone know if this kit has a stepper motor movement?
I would consider converting to an electronic tach if I could convert to a stepper motor movement.

It is not a stepper motor.
