69 interior mystery carpet replacement (pic)
I started removing the carpet in my 69 and started to doubt the originality of the carpet. The carpet is not is green like it should be but isnt glued down at all (which made removal so far pretty easy).
It also had some funky rubber padding underneath the carpet that appears to be the same used in the 80s for house carpet padding.
Someone please tell me this is not factory carpet padding. Picture added.

No, that is not factory carpet padding. Corvettes originally used "jute" backing, under the carpet. Jute is a black fabric padding material, that's about a 1/2" thick.

What a flashback. I remember that exact home carpet backing from a very young boy age in 1968 when we first had new carpeting installed. They put that stuff down and then laid the carpet. I distinctly remember it's very powerful plasti-foam smell, and it was noticeable for months. It probably explains a few of my AWOL brain cells. I remember trimming off a piece, which reminded me of a bug-body, adding a fishing hook, painting it red and giving it a whirl in a pond - having lookers but no takers. Hey, that was well before video games and 250 television channels.
Either way, you'll probably never know the story but that home carpet backing that you found in your car could go back a lot further than the '80's because it was in use in at least the late '60's.
