70 sb Shielding and Air Cleaner Survey
Well the LS5 guys inspired me to start a new thread to try and see when the change over to the one piece shield started on sb 70s.
Mine is sn 11327. Best I can tell it was a one piece shield with open air cleaner. Only original shielding parts on it when purchased were the cover support brackets on the intake. They were the style with only a single weld nut on each bracket. This indicates a single piece shield. Bolts attaching brackets and intake were original so I went one piece. serial number is earlier than is typical.

I don't think it mattered whether it was a SB or BB on which air cleaner/ shielding came from the factory. It was about the time frame when they made a running change on the 1970'S for the air cleaner, shielding & front lower grill pieces. A lot of mid to late VINS have mix & match pieces of both. I believe the LT-1 was the only engine to get a open air cleaner no matter when it was built.

Shield hardware
HI Alan,
Below is a pic shortly after I began work. I needed brakes so I had already done the brake booster.
The shield supports are there as when I brought it home. They are the style typically seen with the one piece shield. Yet mine seems early to see the one piece shield.

Ken,that's why I started the LS5 survey as there seems to be a lot of mix and match with the vin after about 12000. Really looking forward to the responses on this thread.

Hopefully we do get a lot of input. The change was approved in March 1970 so there is a lot of curiosity about when the newer shielding was first available on the assembly line.
