Mpg on C3 good or bad?
Just checked the mpg on my 78 Corvette. 145 miles driven around town. Filled up and calculated just under 9 mpg. Is that as bad as it sounds? Normal? What can I do to better that? I'm sure it would be a lot better straight down the highway. I'm not concerned because I only cruise town 3-5 times a week. Just curious.

Wow. ....9mpg ......I thought mine was bad . .....but you have the correct attitude....if your concerned about MPG ....your driving the wrong model vette.....I get 11-14 depending on how hard I mash the pedal . Over 55 mph and the mpg goes down hill fast .....these old C3 are ruff on fuel with no overdrive . I have stock 3:36 gear . At 75 mph , I d be consuming fuel faster than a Boeing 747

That seems a little lower than "normal". My 1981 gets about 15mpg. Most of my driving is just around town. If you don't use your car as a daily driver, I would say just keep it tuned up with proper tire pressures and enjoy your car. It would be hard to get your money back on an overdrive transmission swap or something else drastic to get better mpg.

I've had 17 Corvettes since 1977, and I do not believe I've ever calculated my miles per gallon.

I've averaged 9 mpg over the last 10 years. Best money spent on the car was for gas...call it smiles per gallon. I've spent more money restoring the car than what I paid for it. Will likely never see that money again.

You're all absolutely right! I don't mind the mpg or the money. Driving around in a C3 Corvette is priceless. It's like this...If you don't have a Corvette...you don't have a Corvette! Mine don't hide in a garage or storage. At this time I believe mine is the only C3 cruising my town.

Dang! Now I'm ashamed I ever admitted figuring my mpg on my 78 Vette! Some things you just don't tell in public and this is obviously one of them. I apologize!

The 1978 EPA revised mileage figures for the 78 Corvette were 14 city, 19 highway and 16 combined. The EPA figures were often a little optimistic, but 9 seems pretty low for a stock 78 Corvette, in good tune.

Men......you miss the point.....
it's really not about MPGs.....
learn from the Rookie.......
It's about getting as far as you can as fast as you can....and synchronizing the fill-ups with the pee-breaks!
(I read that somewhere on the Forum)

I usually just make a note of how much gas I had when I left the house, and how much was left when I got home.
In the case of my stock Q-jet equipped 454, Im pleased with the amount of gas left when I come home. I consider that to be good gas mileage, however have no idea of what it is. For all I know it could be 10mpg and I don't care!

I recently drove my 75 L82 from San Jose to Los Angeles and back. About 800 miles of total driving. I averaged 14 miles per gallon with the freeway driving. Around town I get about 10 miles to gallon.
I also have a 73 454. I am lucky to get 9 mpg. Its so low that I dont like to calculate it. I calculate more on how much it cost me to drive an errand.

LOL Sure feels like it!
I honestly have no clue. I drive it, I fill it, but I've never, actually figured out its mpg... it's not that kind of car.
this will be the first year with the 454, it has a 4 speed and 3.70 rear end. Most of the roads around here are open highway....good thing gas prices are dropping, maybe i should install a tank in the backyard and start filling it up
