Default heater core replacement

I am looking at a 69 vert that needs to have the heater core replaced. I can see that the cover can be removed through the engine bay but do you also have to access it through the inside of the car under the dash?

Yes. Right side dash must come off.
Do a search for pics and tips.
It's not nearly as bad as some people say.
I've done it twice. About 2 to 3 hours work

It depends on A/C or non-A/C.

When they built them the first thing on the assembly line was the heater core. Then they built the car around the core.

The dash pad on the right needs to come as well as the connecting control cables. Need to also remove the attaching nuts in the engine compartment. This will allow you to remove the inside heater box.

Picture 1 & 2 are a clearer shot of what needs to come off, #3 is what it looks like when out. You will have your carpet etc. Good luck

With a non-AC car you can change it completely from the engine bay. There are at least two members that did tutorials.

I believe paul 74 was one of them.

Yes, I did that twice on my 1979. Many moons ago. I posted in the year 2000. Funny how some things never leave the internet!

I did my heater core a couple of yrs ago,I didnt have to remove the pass dash did it from the engine bay. I remembered there are two clips holding the heater core in which are a major pain in the a-- to get out. take your time and youll get them just fine.

Yes those two clips can be a pain but really a minor one. The key from the front is to find a core that is the same size as the old. So take the old out and measure it before purchasing (NAPA, online, whatever) to make sure it is the same size. If not it will go in...with difficulty. And get a new rubber gasket for the snouts. The cover sealing can be done easily with black GOOP or equivalent. But I really like GOOP for many sealing jobs.

I'm procrastinating doing mine. The whole interior is out and I still don't want to do it. It's an A/C car...better get going on it but it still looks like a pain.

If your interior is out there is not much left to do. Well perhaps a little.

You should use molded 90* hoses.

And don't forget the firewall stud. You can yank all you want on the core box (up and out) but it won't come out until you loosen off that fastener.

I did a heater core replacement on my 73 with A/C. I did a write up and a lot of people seem to like it. Here is the post.

Your welcome and I'm glad I asked. There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum and I knew I would get the answer to my question and then some. Thanks to all for your replys. Being a non-a/c car this job looks extremely simple, even for a novice like myself.
