Default Gas Cap

Does anyone have a photo of an 0riginal Gas Cap for a 77'. I'm looking to replace the one I have. I want one that looks like an original. I found them on vender sites, but don't if there correct.

These are tough to find. I browse swap meets (Carlisle) just looking for these caps. Several years ago, we had a rather in-depth discussion at the NCRS tech board on C3 unleaded fuel caps. No one makes a reproduction so all you will get from vendors are aftermarket or service replacements.

You are basically looking for a cap with an ear and finger grips but there were a few different part numbers used to equip Corvettes during the 1975-77 model years. In 1978, they changed and incorporated finger grips but not the year assigned part number GM# 559346.

So for 1977, the specific cap carried the part number GM# 556389. The GM# 7470051 was used from 75-76 but was similar in configuration to the 1977 cap...any of which will fulfill the function you seek to fill. Both carry the broadcast code NDH as they did in 1978-79.

Hope this helps!

Holy cow

I was awful about gas caps as a young man in the 70's......I was always driving off leaving my cap at some pump .

I bought 25 caps during a ten year period as I slowly learned my lessson to slow down

I never lost the 74 , my first corvettes cap. It was the change to the 78 and 79 slope back , had something to do with my habits of holding the cap while I fueled . I was turrible at losing caps on that 79 in particular.

I found the gas tank sticker recently while cleaning out the book case. Hadn't seen it in 30 years .

Thank You for all your help, I learned a lot. The Gas cap that my 77' is sporting is the original, matching part number 556389. Thanks to HUNTER4CLEANAIR for posting photos. I'm going to keep the one I have. I'll just clean it up a little. The ones that the venders are selling are plastic BS.... Happy New Year Everyone....

That's actually an early version of an unleaded fuel cap before GM made it a one piece assembly.

You can confirm with the date code that is embossed on the inside of the cap. Turn it upside down, look inside for the numbers. Look for something like 037 or 3rd week of 77.

Early..say 1973 but its use on Corvettes is not clear. Take a picture of the underneath with the numbers and lets see if the date code is similar as later years.

Sorry took so long. I'm on vac. and went to the beach today by myself. What an awesome day. There were no numbers underneath. Just on the "ear".
