slightly off topic but Barrett Jackson
I sort of watched Barret Jackson at Scottsdale this week. I didn't see all of it, but what I did see raised a few curiosities.
One of the highest selling "classic" Corvettes was highly modified.
http://classiccars.com/listings/view...arizona-85260#
The modified 57 with a huge late model big block went for more than the "original" models. $200,000.
The top three "classics" didn't sell for the millions the owners were asking.
I found it interesting the top three non sellers were corvette race cars.

To be honest, I don't put a lot of stock in Barret, or Mecum or any of those auctions. I don't have that kind of money to spend and it seems to me that many of those guys have more money than brains.
It does makes me wonder what is going on in the Corvette Collector arena. It seems to be all over the place.
The fellow got the first 2015 ZO6 for 800,000, all proceeds going to charity, got a great deal. I wonder if he'll ever drive it?????

I didn't see the L-88 sell for $280k. That is surprisingly cheap if it is a real documented car. We have some forum members who are experts on this topic. I would love to hear their opinion on this one.... maybe get the "real story"
I did watch the 2 no-sale racecars, and I found it extremely annoying. What bugs the crap out of me is the reserve. I get very skeptical when the bidding goes up and up and you have no clue what the reserve is. If I did have enough money to bid on cars like that I would never participate in a reserve auction. I simply don't trust them. Was that a real buyer with real money willing to pay $1.6mm for that L-88 race car? It was absolutely beautiful, but not an original L-88. I don't know if the car's race history warrants a value over $1mm. And the 53 NASCAR race car. I bet Rick Hendrick would love to own that car, but to me it just looked like pure BS. The reserve could have been $20mm and various people could just be bidding it up on TV to try to create value. If you see it get bid up to $2.2mm with no sale then it must be a real bargain at $1.75mm, right? If it had been sold with no reserve it might have gone for $1mm.
The only thing more annoying to me than the cars that were sold with a reserve was the announcers who had no idea if a reserve was met or lifted. More than once I saw the bidding stall and the announcer would say that the car was being sold with a reserve that hasn't been met..... and the auctioneer hammers it "SOLD!"
I am still amazed at the relatively low prices of a very nice restored Corvette, even a 67 tripower, compared to Mustangs and Camaros.
Did Rick Hendrick buy that? He collects Corvettes with serial #1. He doesn't drive most of them.... how could he?

I'm not really surprised,
In the case of c3's most are modded, from a little to a lot, the stock purists cars are now a minority so this will trickle up the ranks to the fellows you say have more $$$ than brains and they will buy some resto mod.
However, I used to say that a lot about more $$$ than brains but if a fellow is lets say a multi millionaire for him to spend say 200 plus k on some really stunning turn key trailer jewel is not unlike me at my pay rate spending 5K on some project that people would call trash....

What annoyed me is watching dozens and dozens of C1s, C2s, 67-69 Camaros and 64-70 mustangs be shown and then when the finally get something different and exciting on the block (a 72 Pantera) they go to a boring interview with the nobody Barry Mcguiar and miss it or they get a 71 Boss 351 Mustang and they're on commercial.

I watched nearly the entire auction from Tuesday through Saturday night. My take was modded cars were selling for a lot more than stock cars unless you have something rare or special.
At that auction if you had a typical run of the mill Corvette, Camero, Mustang, etc you were money ahead to have upgrades to modern hardware.
A lot of the cars were sold for a lot more than they were probably worth, but there were a couple cars where I felt bad for the seller. One in particular was a restomod Studebaker that easily had $100k invested that went for $25k.
I was also taking with a friend who lives in Scottsdale and he said every single woman in town was out cruising the auctions and local bars.
This event has crossed over from being a car auction to become a happening.
Anyhoo... that was my 2 cents.

I DVR the whole auction and then zap thru it. This was one of the first auctions that most of the cars were bid out if reach. Prices were ridiculous except for some cars on Sunday. Seemed like every car was 70k plus and then you ran 1-200k on others. Some people have wayyy to much $$$$. It is on my bucket list to go out there one day!

I lost interest in this stuff a couple of years ago. You add cameras and a sprinkling of B movie/sports star and the prices seem to be 5 times their "true" street value.

The first car on Sunday that got about 46 sec of coverage (it was hammered sold before the live shots) was a new '64 Cheetah kit. $40k + premium. Subtract about 20% for the B-J hype and we now know what a new one is worth (although I doubt you could build it for that).

B/J has always been to auction with high dollars. Mecum at least the first couple of days you can get some decent deals. I still like to see the expensive ones hammer too though.
I guess B/J is trying to steal back some of Mecums TV earnings. They used to show them years ago on Discovery with Mecum but disappeared.
I probably watch more TV auctions than regular TV. I wish Mecum would come to the ATL. I'd take vaca just to go watch.

2020 Corvette of the Year Finalist (appearance mods)
C3 of Year Winner (appearance mods) 2019
Yes, it was rick hendrick that bought it. I believe he has all of the number one c7s produced in every configuration and has almost 150 corvettes alone.
Still my favorite is the Owens Corning vette he bought last year or the year before.

I like the paint job too but Mr Hendrick paid $1,100,000 for a car built (by the O-C team) from parts they took off the production line which means it was never a GM built car and not an original L-88. the car below is the same car as the one in my avatar, the third O-C car built from a recovered theft Tony Delorenzo bought from Don Yenko documented 100% BUT because neither Tony or Jerry drove it I can`t sell it for 10% of what Mr Hendrick paid...

I was at the auction this weekend. From memory, most C3's didn't sell for much. I saw five big block cars (two 68's, three 71-72's) that sold for under $40k. A few 71-72 LT-1's that were under $40k. One LT-1 (forget which year) sold for around $70k, one 73 or 74 (7000 miles) sold for $48k. I'm sure there were others, but that's what I saw.
