Default Pulling steering column

What are the pros and cons of either opening the rag joint or opening the spline to remove the column? I'm getting ready to do this, and have seen it recommended both ways, Thx

The steering gear came into the car assembly plant with the flexible coupling assembly with the "bowtie" flange already installed on the gear. That flexible coupling had two shoulder bolts sticking out toward the steering column. A worker inside the car then stuck the steering column down through the dash structure and another worker located the flange on the steering column so that the two shoulder bolts passed through the locating holes in the column flange. That worker installed lockwashers and nuts on the shoulder bolts and torqued them to specification.

I think that this is probably the easiest and most practical way of connection (or disconnecting) the steering column from the flexible coupling on the steering gear.

Thank you Jim, do you recall the torque spec on the bolts?
