Default When you fix something are you surprised it works

I took bluthundred easy fix with the nylon screws to replace the rivets that break on the horn contacts. I put everything back in the steering wheel, reconnected the battery, and the horn worked. I was floored, because things had been taken apart before i bought the car, and I was not sure what all they may have cobbed up, or cut out. One small thing taken care of, with alot still on the list to do. It feels good when thing go the wright way with these cars. I'm sure others here on the forum have felt the same way when something worked out like it was planed. Well back to the drawing board, hope other repairs go as well.

Yes. I am surprised when things go right. It's a great feeling though. What is cool is that the more I do the better I get at fixing things. I guess that goes without saying but it is nice to not be a total novice at this now.

I know exactly the feeling you are talking about. First, with my steering. I have father started installing steeroids on my car, but never finished it before he passed away. When I took it over, I had to finish connecting everything and align the tires. I've never worked on any steering before, but I just kept adjusting everything until I got it right! Probably not a b ig accomplishment to some people, but I was pretty jazzed about it!

Yes especially when I fix something from scratch and it turns out better than when it came out of the manufacturing plant.

All except the time I attempted to rebuild the rear dif in my Dodge (at the time) Ram truck. Whined like an SOB and then burned up the bearings.

When it comes to rear differentials and shimming, I take it to the shop from now on.

Every time! There's a million ways to screw up, and only one way to success.

I like that feeling of taking something old apart, and then refinishing it and making it look new again. Polishing, repainting, repairing, etc. In the end my Vettes are going to look brand new so that when I retire all I have to do is drive them.

Need a good laugh?

I fixed something that was broken last week....steering column was broken into two pieces....collapsible half had broken away 1 & 1/4" from upper cylindrical half............

I carefully aligned every individual broken piece and welded the two halves together.....

I was ecstatic................................ ......................

Today when I re-installed the repaired steering column..................................

it was 1 & 1/4" TOO SHORT......when bolted to the dash support and the firewall, the lower end of the steering shaft would not engage the upper half of the rag-joint!

I thought and studied/thought and studied/thought and studied/got a headache/went inside/took Advil/returned to garage an hour later.

I cut the repaired 1 & 1/4" out of the collapsible portion of the column/re-attached the upper and lower halves/re-installed the assembly.

IT FIT PERFECTLY!

Moral of the story:

"I did something right that turned out wrong.....so I did it wrong and it turned out right!"

My car didn't pass inspection once because the windshield washers didn't work! The station was going to overlook the high beams not working but they were complaining about the windshield washers. Go figure.

I took the washer apart and figured I would never find a dual lip seal to replace the original. Since I had replaced my brake seals with O-rings a light bulb went off.

I bought 2 O-rings at the local hardware store. The first one filled the original slot and the second filled the gap in the pump bore. When I tried it out it worked fine and has been passing inspection for 3 years.

I used to be surprised. But I've been surprised so many times, now I expect it. And if it doesn't turn out, I rant. Then I try it again and get surprised again. Oh... the humility.

Welcome to my world - the land of Bubba
I think all of the fixes above are great.
And many other people on here, if they found those same fixes on their car, would cry Bubba!

Nothing like repairing something yourself and getting it right.

I too recently repaired my sterring. I am not sure if I was surprised that I fixed it. Just happy I was done with it. I spent many hours on it. About 8 strait hours. I was proud And did a loud wooho when it was donE went bought some beer sat back in the car. Was a good feeling was the first major job I have done to the car And I have never worked on steering ever before.
