Vacuum hose filter. Supposed to prevent foreign material from being sucked into the engine.
Many original ones lost their filter material long ago.

I would recommend having one. You can check it by pulling it off and peering through it. You should not be able to see through it, and see the filter material. It should not be plugged also. Most of the major vendors have them I believe. I recently got one from Willcox.

It should be in the vacuum supply line for headlights (and wiper door depending on model year). Where does yours go?

Hi r,
As you can see the filter in your picture has an AC logo on it.
Even if the element inside is compromised some people would like to have it because of the logo. $
Regards,
Alan

Hi joew,
I believe your description is for the operation of the gray metal 'check valve', not the white plastic 'filter'.
Regards,
Alan
