Were kick panel speakers an option for 1972 vette?
I want to install 4 x 6 kick panel speakers in my 72 corvette. The currently are none installed. Was this a factory option? Is/was there some kind of a bracket to install 4 x 6 speakers. I can build my own, just looking for an easier way. I'm not interested in cutting the kick panels for larger speakers

Hi B,
After the speakers moved to the underside of the dash pad for the 70 model year they were no longer offered, even as an option, in the kick panels.
Regards,
Alan

If you decide to add speakers to your kick panel area, be sure to match the ohms to your radio. Original units required unique matching. I think they need 10 ohm, but will depend on someone else to ring in and either confirm or correct.

10 ohm speakers for matching with the Delco radio head. Those speakers can either be in the dash or in the kickpanels. If you want speakers in BOTH places, buy 4 ohm speakers (for dash and kicks) and wire them in SERIES, so the total speaker load (on each side) is 8 ohms. That impedence match is OK and will not present a problem for the Delco amp.

I personally mounted some 4x6's in my 71 using what are called Toggle Bolts. They have a duck bill like expanding end. Just using 4 of these was all I needed to hold in the speakers. They did not move at all. I want to say the opening is slightly larger than the 4x6 speakers and the bolts worked by grabbing onto the inside of the bird cage. It also helps recess the speakers so the kick panels will fit back on.

Most modern radio heads have a 4 ohm or 2 ohm output impedence...not the 10 ohm impedence of the [now ancient] 70's Delco radios. So, the speakers you select need to have impedence values that match the radio/amp to which they are installed.
It is not harmful to have speakers with HIGHER impedence values than what the radio/amp requires; but the volume level will suffer, as full current can not be drawn with the mis-matched speakers. Speakers having too LOW an impedence will cause signal distortion and, if volume level is set high, could 'fry' the output power section of the radio/amp unit.
