best tires for 72 vette
dragging my 72 vette home on the 8th, get it running, driving ect...ect... tries are trashed. Looking for the widest set of tires I can fit on the back without going to wheel spacers. have yet to look at rims but I won't go above a 17. I usually like the stock rims but if need be they can go. Rim recommendations would also be great. Looking for the best overall performance.

255 is safe on the rear for width, unless you want a trailer trash look, with the wheels sticking past the quarter panels. I had 245s on the front of my '71 with no problem. A 27.1" or so tall tire is ideal. You will have to go with BFG or Cooper if you want these on 15" wheels.

I've run 245's on all 4 corners and 255 front with 275 rear. The 245's had no rubbing issue up front, the 255's would rub at full turn in, the 275's were even with the outside fender and did not stick out. On some 72's, 255's won't rub at all. I just switched to 17" wheels to get better rubber underneath.

Going any larger than that you start to run into the risk of tires rubbing or the fender lip catching on a hard bounce although some people say they've run 275/60-R15 on the rear w/o issues. If you've got the stock 15x7 rallys you might need to go a size smaller or so like 245/60-R15. YMMV.

You can only guarantee that 235 width and smaller tires will fit in the front wheelwells of a '72. Some will take 245's; a few can accept 255's.
255's will fit the rear for sure.
